A few days before the trading deadline, the Rangers traded OF Tom Grieve to the Giants for renowed right-handed pitcher Juan Marical and AA outfielder Jim Howarth. This move was very popular with the Texas fans and media, who have long admired the successful Dominican pitcher from afar and are excited to see him play for their still-new franchise in Texas. Giants fans are saddenned by the trade and coming to the realization that their 60's glory days are over and their team is now having to rebuild with trades such as these.
In a press conference, Executive Manager Riley Payton said the following on Marichal: "We are very happy to trade for a legend and a future Hall of Famer. Juan is a class act and a great influence. He's hungry for a World Series ring. He never wants to come out of games and he never stops signing autographs for the fans. Putting Juan's popularity aside, he's still a very valuable reliever who can pitch a lot of innings and help us shore up our bullpen and support the starting rotation. We will call upon him often to help us stay atop in the AL West. We are in for a fight in this division. I would not rule out that we might also need Howarth down the stretch."
