A's Beat up Browns, 11-1
May 23, 1950 (Tuesday) - St. Louis, MO
W/L record 18-18 (.500), 5th place, 4.0 GB, Streak W3, Last10 6-4
The Philadelphia Athletics gave a serious thumping to the St. Louis Browns Tuesday night, beating them 11-1.
Philadelphia offense came through in fine fashion, stroking 11 base hits and earning eight walks on the night. Ferris Fain jumpstarted the offense hitting a two out, three-run home run in the third inning off St. Louis starter Ned Garver (L, 4-2). Garver was stung badly by Philadelphia, allowing 11 earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.
The A's continued the offense scoring a run in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings and capped off a five-run 7th behind pitcher Bobby Shantz's bases clearing double.
Shantz is awarded player of the game going 3 for 4 with three RBI in addition to a complete game performance allowing only one earned run on eight hits. He earned his league leading sixth win of the season.
The third consecutive win puts the A's at the .500 mark as they find themselves moving up to 5th place in the very tight American League standings. Four games separate the A's from the 1st place Tigers but they find themselves only 4.5 games ahead of the last place Senators.
The A's hope to continue their win streak when they take on the Chicago White Sox for a two game series starting Wednesday at Comiskey Park.
