May 27, 1950 (Saturday) - Philadelphia, PA
W/L record 19-20 (.487), 6th place, 4.5 GB, Streak W1, Last10 6-4
The Philadelphia Athletics opened a 17-game homestand with a decisive win against the New York Yankees at Shibe Park by a score of 12-7.
The Yankees defense was not on their game as they served up five errors. The Yankees fumbled three times in the 5th inning, two of which belonged to third baseman Bobby Brown. Center Fielder Jim Delsing got the start for veteran Joe DiMaggio and also erred twice.
Ed Lopat (4-4) is collared with the loss though he pitched well. Only four of his eight runs given up were earned.
Though the Yankees had defensive issues, Philadelphia bats took full advantage of the miscues. Ferris Fain continues his hot streak with a grand slam in the 7th inning off of reliever Duane Pillette, and Elmer Valo hit a three-run home run in the third inning off of Lopat.
Manager Nick Morgan commented about his recent shuffling of the batting order:
"I spoke with the GM, and he decided that we need to get Chapman back in the lineup more regularly, and we went ahead and moved Fain up to the second slot. We think having Chapman higher in the lineup should help stimulate the offense. Valo should be hitting in the cleanup slot for the time being. We'll see how this works out."
Fain gets the player of the game award, and starter Joe Coleman gets the win. His record improves to 3-6.
The Athletics will take on the Yankees in a double header on Sunday.
