A's, Yanks split double-header
May 28, 1950 (Sunday) - Philadelphia, PA
W/L record 20-21 (.488), 6th place, 4.5 GB, Streak L1, Last10 6-4
The Philadelphia Athletics and the New York Yankees split a double header Sunday at Shibe Park.
The A's took the first game by a score of 9-5 behind lefty Bobby Shantz. Shantz picked up his American League leading seventh win pitching a complete game allowing five earned runs on seven hits. Though his control was spotty at times walking seven, he calmed down in the later innings to complete the effort. He allowed a solo home run in the seventh off the bat of second baseman Joe Gordon, but still struck out five on the day.
The A's offense jumped on Allie Reynolds right out of the gate, scoring four runs in the first inning including a 2-run home run off the bat of center fielder Sam Chapman. Reynolds' record drops to 1-5.
Other notes:
Catcher Joe Tipton went three for three driving three runs on the day and shortstop Eddie Joost was struck by a pitch and will be out 5-6 weeks with a broken thumb. He was struggling offensively this season batting .195 with 2 home runs and 23 RBI.

The Yankees won game two in fine fashion shutting out the Athletics on seven hits, 7-0. Max Lanier (W, 2-2) pitched eight innings allowing only six hits and struck out four.
The game's only offense was a two-run homer from Joe DiMaggio in the fourth inning off Alex Kellner (L, 2-6), but it wasn't until the ninth inning when A's pitcher Joe Coleman got beat up allowing five earned runs on four hits and two walks. Yogi Berra's pinch-hit three-run double capped off the inning.
Good news:
Ferris Fain received the American League player of the week award piling up 10 hits in 22 at-bats while stroking 3 home runs, 9 RBI and hitting at a .455 clip.
The A's are off Monday and play a quirky Tuesday double header against the Washington Senators before the first place Tigers come into town Thursday for a three game set.
