W/L record 22-22 (.500), T-5th place, 3.5 GB, Streak W2, Last10 6-4
The Philadelphia Athletics started a three game set with the American League leading Detroit Tigers with a victory at Shibe Park, 4-3.
9900 fans witnessed the dispatching of the Tigers in well played game. Bobby Shantz went the distance, picking up his league leading 8th win of the season; however the player of the game honor goes to center fielder Sam Chapman who went 2 for 3 with two home runs and three RBI. This is the second time this season has gone deep twice in a game; he did it against St. Louis on May 6 when his four RBI contributed to a 7-4 win over the Browns at Shibe Park.
Detroit's Art Houtteman pitched well but gets the loss, his third of the year. His 1.95 ERA in 11 starts and 87 innings is still good for the second in the league. Bobby Shantz struck out six, which ties his record for the season. He last struck out six on April 21 against the Red Sox.
Kermit Wahl also had a notable performance, going 2 for 4 with a double and a triple. The A's have been searching for a replacement while veteran Eddie Joost is out due to wrist soreness from a collision running the bases. Joost is listed day to day, but is expected to miss two weeks.
The A's finished May with a 14-14 record; and Elmer Valo gets the American League batter of the month, hitting .380 with two home runs, 22 RBIs and 23 runs scored. His .407 average is still tops in the AL.
