Over the past few days we have been able finalize the contracts of 4 players who will be suiting up for the Pirates in 2014:
25 year old 3B Carlos Rivero signed a 1 year contract for 950K and hopes to win a job as a utility infielder out of spring training.
25 year old relief pitcher Jhan Marinez signed a 1 year contract for 750K and will be competing for a bullpen spot.
25 year old starting pitcher Simon Castro signed a 1 year contract for 850K and is hoping to be able to make enough of an impression in the spring to win a spot in what has become a crowded starting rotation.
31 year old international Free Agent Iwane Inoue signed a 1 year contract for 750K and is looking to earn a spot in the back of the bullpen.
The roster is really shaping up. I feel we have taken our limited resources and spread them around enough so that we can rest assured that we are bringing 40 talented players to camp and letting them compete.
There is one more piece to the puzzle that I have been working on and that is to find a middle of the order power bat. As we head to the winter meetings I've been in contact with a couple of GM's and its really come down to 2 first basemen. I'm hoping that by the end of next week we will have a deal done.
News from around the league:
The Giants have finalized a deal with 34 year old LF Coco Crisp. The deal is worth an estimated $21 mil. over 3 years. Crisp had a good year for Oakland in 2013 with a line of .270/.326/.388 in 582 AB. He also added 8 HR 56 RBI 79 RS and 50 SB. Crisp will play LF and bat lead off for the Giants.
After testing the free agent market the 34 year old catcher Carlos Ruiz has decided to stay with the Phillies signing a 3 year deal for a total of $51 mil. Ruiz hit .262 with a 11 HR and 51 RBI last year for the Phillies. Ruiz will bat in the 2 hole for the Phils in 2014.
