Changes for Historical ERA Settings over time...

Does anybody have the changes that should be made for the historical era settings over time? Unfortunately these don't adjust as the league continues over time so I guess we have to do it manually.

The settings are

Use of Relievers
Use of Closers
Pitcher Endurance
Typical Rotation Size
Pinch Hit for Pitchers
Pinch Hit for Position Players
Defensive Substitutions
Stealing
Hit & Run
Bunting

I went back to 6.5 and took the settings from there. Don't know of another way to do it.

Did you compile that and could you post it?

I'll try to do that after work today. In the meantime, I believe the same ERA settings are available in the free download of OOTP5.

I got these from importing seasons from the AROD database starting in 1901 and checking for when it changes the era settings.

Years, Relievers, Closers, Endurance, Rotation, PH/Pitchers, PH/Position Players, Defensive Subs, Stealing Bases, Hit & Run, Bunting

1901-18, VR, VR, High, 4-man, VR, R, N, VO, VO, VO
1919-40, VR, VR, Normal, 4-man, VR, R, N, N, O, O
1941-59, R, VR, Normal, 4-man, R, R, N, N, O, O
1960-73, N, R, Normal, 4-man, R, R, N, N, N, N
1974-91, O, VO, Normal, 5-man, O, R, N, O, N, R
1992-05, VO, VO, Low, 5-man, VO, R, N, N, R, VR

VR - Very Rarely
R - Rarely
N - Normal
O - Often
VO - Very Often

I don't know how historically accurate these necessarily are, but maybe it'll help.

Awesome!

1901-02 should probably feature 3-man rotations. Once the schedule was expanded to 154 games, that seems to be about the time that managers began to utilize the 4th pitcher. Also, I'd lower the one-run strategies (stealing, hit and runs, and sacrifices) to "normal" by the mid-20s, raise them back to "often" during the war years, and then dip hit and run and steals to "very rarely" from 1946 to around 1959 or 1960. The game of the 40s and the 50s was very station to station.

When I have Stealing Bases on Very Often I get hugely inflated SB numbers. In one historical starting in 1901, I had 4 guys over 900 steals by 1910, with the leader sporting almost 1,300.

Don't know if anyone else has seen this, but it has made me reluctant to use "Very Often" settings.

I think I disagree with this. In 1901, no pitcher started 1/3 of his teams games. A few were used more than in a regular four man rotation, but I think it was more in the mold of "use highest rested starter" than a regular three man rotation.

Gambo 06-19-2006 05:21 PM

I agree with the inflated stolen base numbers they are too high with the very often settings.

As for the 3-man rotation I think if you have the 3 man rotation set it pretty much will use the highest rested starter cuz the guys just never recover enough... then again I haven't tested this too much.

Lidstrom 06-19-2006 07:07 PM

Using a 3-man rotation, I had players with 55+ starts.

Using the Arod/Garlon DB puts SB numbers very much back in line with what they should be in the early years, even a tad low in sime cases.

I've simmed the 1957 MLB Season a number of times, trying to learn to use the modifiers for statistical accuracy. So far, I'm doing okay. But it's not unusual to see 18-20 losses for a starting pitcher, sometimes even 22 or 24. Can I change any settings to prevent the AI from continuing to trot out these losing pitchers? Wouldn't a 20-game loser at some point lose his spot in the rotation?

In a 140 game season? Upon further reflection, 4 man with "start highest rested" may be the way to go, but I get team leaders with 50 GS in a 3-man and a 140 game season and only around 36-37 with 4. That looks like you're almost exactly in the middle of 3 and 4. I'm thinking that with the way the game overuses relief pitchers in this era, going a bit high with the GS is going to give you a proper number of IPs for your top guys.

Yep. I will try your suggestion the next time I find the time to try starting up a historical league. Thanks.
