Ed Stein suffered an elbow injury around August 1, 1963, but that was not the end of his career. He continued to pitch for Rocky Mount that August. The Tampa Times of Oct. 24, 1963 placed him with the Cincinnati Reds' winter league team and reported that he pitched a strong eight innings, yielding three runs and eight hits. That was the last game I could find for him. No explanation for why he didn't pitch again.

His Sporting News contract card indicates that following Rocky Mount, he was next assigned to Macon. On April 17, 1964, he was placed on the temporary inactive list, so my conjecture is that he was injured in a minor league spring training camp in 1964. He had no minor league record in 1964, and he went into voluntarily retired status on March 22, 1965.

He had been a non-roster invitee to the Cincinnati Reds' spring camp in 1963.
