Injuries ended a promising start
Ed Stein won 38 games in his first three minor league seasons and then never threw another pitch. I can only assume that arm problems caught up with him. In '63 his strikeouts dropped from 135 to 50.

Julius Grant
Here is a hard throwing southpaw of the 60's . Julius Grant was a good hitting pitcher. He went 58-55 over 8 minor league seasons and hit .200 with 5 home runs never advancing beyond AAA. His 6 Mexican league campaigns are a statistical mystery. It looks like he threw with velocity but command and control were an issue.
Here is Julius Grant with The Monterrey Sultans where he played from '63 to '68. Julius appears to be the brother Jim "Mudcat" Grant to whom he certainly bears a strong resemblance. I did not find anything yet stating this outright. Both Grants were born in different North Florida towns two years apart. |

Lou Skizas
Thanks for the pictures, but should be corrected to Lou Skizas...nicknamed "The Nervous Greek". Played with the Yankees (1956), KC A's (56-57), Tigers (58), and ChiSox (1959). Traded by the White Sox to the Cincinnati Reds in May 1959. Played 3 years as a Reds' farmhand, but never got back to the majors with them or any other team.

Ed Stein
Quote:
His Sporting News contract card indicates that following Rocky Mount, he was next assigned to Macon. On April 17, 1964, he was placed on the temporary inactive list, so my conjecture is that he was injured in a minor league spring training camp in 1964. He had no minor league record in 1964, and he went into voluntarily retired status on March 22, 1965. He had been a non-roster invitee to the Cincinnati Reds' spring camp in 1963. https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=stein-001edw https://digital.la84.org/digital/col...edward%20stein |
