Odd PxP

Was managing a game earlier and had a batter pop the ball up behind him. As the catcher settled under it the center fielder ranged in toward the ball. He left it for the catcher, but man that guy's got some legs on him.

Sorry I don't have the actual text.

If you could come up with anything close to the text, I could search english.xml to check. Could you provide any additional detail?

Ahh, geez. I'm sorry, but it was last night and I've since forgotten the exact situation and wording. It was something like "He pops it up behind home plate. The catcher goes back for it. Frank Smith [the centerfielder] has a bead on it, but he backs off and the catcher snags the ball." That's probably not particularly accurate, but it's the best I can do. I'll, of course, re-post with more detail if I see it again.

OK, I will monitor this.

What I've found out is that I like editing english.xml in Open Office over MS Office. I use CONTROL-F to search the file, so if you give me the exact words, I can pinpoint it in a second. I used that process Friday to eliminate quite a few glitches. Unfortunately, I don't have Open Office on my home PC, but I am d/l the app right this second.

Got it!
"Emmanuel Isita hits a pop up...
on the infield, left side...
Camarillo [3B] takes a few steps and settles under it...
Rodriguez [CF] has an eye on it too...
but he's waved off by Camarillo...
and he grabs it..."
Slightly different as the ball isn't popped up behind the plate here, but I'm almost positive that's the same message I had last time and it makes just as little sense that a centerfielder would come in on an infield pop up.

Here's the problem . . .

Ever seen a really, really high pop up ( in 56D if you are looking at the Retrosheet ballpark diagram ) that really starts drifting back towards the OF and CF? The 3B good have called it, the ball wandered up above due to wind, and the CF, because it is in front of him, makes a running catch.

Well, my excuse kinda sucks, as the 3B only took a few steps.

Into the english.xml file . . .

Still, that's a STRETCH. More than likely it would be the SS in that situation...unless you've got a Jim Thome shift employed.

Pretty much what I was thinking, Waninski. And the more specific problem is that the game seems to be using the text for any popup at all, as the first time I saw it was with the centerfielder eyeing a ball popped up behind home plate.

I will add that I also saw this last night. Pop-up behind the plate and my catcher had to call off the right fielder. I had to read it 3 times to make sure I was seeing it correctly.

Unfortunately I don't remember the text well enough to have it searched for. Will keep my eye open.

It makes it hard to find, not sure which categories were called during the sequence.

You can turn on debug options when playing games that will give us the numbers called.

http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...d.php?t=119739

Just do part one only though:

add_debug_info_to_in_game_commentary
If you change the value for this entry from 0 to 1, when you play the game, the Category ID and the Text Object ID will be displayed for each text object that appears in the game, like this:

[330-6442] missed that offering by Dave McNiven, a fastball low...

In this case, the 330 is the category ID, and the 6442 is the text object ID. You can then find these within the english.xml file by searching for "id="6442"", for example.

This is incredibly helpful if you see an option that you don't like, because you can easily find it and eliminate it from the XML file.

This setting affects both game play-by-play and news articles.
