6th of April Signing Rush

What is the deal with the sudden rush by CPU teams to sign free agents on 6 April?

Each time I have started a league (no inaugural draft, no historical players) I am the only team signing players from 1 January until 6 April. Then, suddenly, on 6 April I get a flood of emails about other teams signing players for the next 1-2 weeks.

There's no competition for players at game start, which means I can load my roster fairly easily, even with a mid-market team.

And the timing is *really* weird. That date (6 April) is 2-3 days after the start of the regular season...a very odd time to be signing players, in my mind.

Yeah, this needs to be addressed. The AI teams should be competing for free agents from day one. And players should be more willing to keep their options open instead of signing the 1st offer they get on April 2nd.
