FA's sitting on Market for Years
In an historical sim i got through 2009, i've had a few instances where a player coming out off a great year, becomes a free agent and then isnt signed for 2 years and retires.
Rickey Henderson in 1983: .305 AVG, 16 HR, 68 RBI. He became a free agent and then in 1985 he retired. 06-29-1983 Was selected to the 1983 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. 07-10-1983 Injured (Sprained Ankle), out for 2-3 weeks. 08-02-1983 Injured (Strained Achilles Tendon), out for 4 weeks. 11-15-1983 Became a free agent. 01-01-1984 SISA scouting updated ratings (potential): Contact: 77 (62); Power: 52 (39); Eye: 80 (75). 01-01-1985 SISA scouting updated ratings (potential): Contact: 77 (62); Power: 52 (39); Eye: 80 (75). 01-01-1985 Retired from professional baseball Mike Schmidt in 1977: .304 AVG, 44 HR, 142 RBI. Became a free agent and then retired in 1979 10-31-1977 Won the 1977 MLB NL Gold Glove Award at 1B. 11-14-1977 Became a free agent. 01-01-1978 SISA scouting updated ratings (potential): Contact: 67 (61); Power: 94 (85); Eye: 72 (67). 01-01-1979 SISA scouting updated ratings (potential): Contact: 64 (61); Power: 88 (85); Eye: 68 (67). 01-01-1979 Retired from professional baseball. Dave Kingman in 1977: .182 AVG, 31 HR, 82 RBI. Same thing as Schmidt. Retired in 79. It must be because teams just dont have enough money. I had revenue sharing on. You'd think they would settle for a much smaller contract instead of retiring.

Unsigned free agents
I'm playing in 1995 using the Lahman database. I started in 1987 and had progressed through 1993 before the patch. I noticed something last night when looking at available free agents late in the summer (July and August), several of the best free agents were left unsigned! Tony Gwynn, Mark Grace, Roberto Alomar and Jay Buhner. So thinking I've just found a pocket of gold to help me down the stretch I try to offer them some cash.
Grace asked for 4 years and $22.5 million total or $5.65 per season. I haggled a little and he kept declining. Finally I just went ahead and gave him want he wanted. His response was that the money was not enough. I offered more and got the same response. I gave up and a day later he signed with another team! I did the same thing with Gwynn but started at his asking price this time. He said I did not offer enough money, despite his demands showing this was EXACTLY what he wanted. In both cases of Gwynn and Grace I did not offer option years or no trade clauses. Is this a bug? For the record, I had the best record in the league at the time but was playing with the small market Twins. I don't know if either of these factors contributed in this case, but it would have been nice to receive an email that said they didn't want to play in Minnesota rather than I was not offering enough money. Even worse was the fact that these guys went unsigned until July and then as soon as I negotiated with them, they all of the sudden signed with another team. As if everyone forgot about them until I approached them. Anyone else see this? Thanks, Shawn |

An updated on this. Roberto Alomar actually sat out the entire 1995 season and then signed a lucrative deal with Kansas City immediately following the season. Holding out, I'm sure is not a bug, the thing that I was concerned about was the email message I was getting from these players was inaccurate.
If hold outs were indeed part of the programming...well done! Shawn |

I'm seeing at least one All-Star type player doing this every season now. I could see it happening once-in-a-blue-moon, but it shouldn't be an every season occurance. Shouldn't the players start coming down in their asking price once the All-Star game rolls around and they aren't even signed yet!?!
Then this past season I was rewarded a compensation #1 pick because my player held out for an entire season and was signed when the season was over. On one hand I'm glad that I was given a pick eventually, but on the other hand it doesn't seem very realistic. thanks again, Shawn |

I've had this happen a lot too. Mike Schmidt, Lou Whitaker, and Dave Kingman all when they became FA's sat on the market for 2 years and just retired. That was even when i kept getting messages that kansas city didnt have enough players LOL.

I have seen players that my scouts found that declined offers that matched what they asked for.

We have a new rule that states that Tech Support threads wherein we have not received a response within 7 days will be closed.
This one meets this criteria, so I'm closing this. If you want to discuss it again, just PM me with the thread link, and I'll re-open. (Don't just say "Hey, reopen my thread." I need to know the URL, thanks!) Steve |
