League Structures and Historical Databases

If you use one of the databases to start a historical career in 1985, do you have to use the exact same league structure, teams, and team names that were in place that year and thereafter?

For example, what if you wanted to delete two of the AL teams so that both AL and NL have symmetrical six-team divisions. Is that possible, and, if so, what would happen when you generate the league to the players that started out on the deleted teams?

What if you wanted to have the 1985 Montreal Expos be the Washington Nationals instead?

Also, is it possible using a historical database to continue the league from 1985 without expansion and without the change in league structure to three divisions per league?

You are not using the historical part of the program the way it was designed to be used, which is to have historically correct teams, year by year, as far as team names, cities, ballparks, etc.

I really do not know what would happen if you deleted teams and still wanted to use the historical expansion part of the program. Best way to find out is to create a test league and see what happens. There are SO MANY possible scenarios that you can set it, if we have 10 times the amount of beta testers, we could not test each possible one.

Give it a try and let us know what happens, if there are problems, maybe the crew can figure out a work around.

No, you can change the structure if you like.

You should start the league first (import from Lahman or whichever DB you're using) then delete the teams you don't want. The players will all go to the FA pool.

You can move the Expos to Washington without any problems.

You can disable expansion in your league setup. Under options uncheck the box for "Automatically expand league"

I'm going to assume you intend to have a draft rather than have players going to their real life teams when they are imported each season?

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like what I'm interested in doing is possible.

Yes, BruceM, I would want to have a draft each year rather than players going to real teams.
