OOTP and Norton Anti-Virus

I have discovered the cause of a bug that will severely slow down and even crash OOTP 2007 if you leave the game open and idle overnight and have Norton Anti-Virus set to automatically update definitions or do a disk scan.

It was posted as a TT and Markus says it won't be possible to patch this year, apparently because the problem is with NAV and not OOTP.

If you encounter this problem, simply close and restart your game. Everything should go back to normal.

It took me several builds to finally figure out what was causing this problem.

Get rid of that Clunker and install Avast from the website with the same name. It is free and it uses less memory than the CPU sucking Symantek Products.

There is also AVG, which is what I use at home.

Norton and McAfee are like bolting 8 tons of 3/4" steel plates all over your Corvette to keep you safe in an accident.

My in-laws had the Symantek Security Suite on their PC and it turned a perfectly acceptable machine into an disaster. It was like they were running XP on a machine spec'd out in 1997.

For the love of God, get Avast or AVG, and just don't do wildly stuid things that get your computer infected.

I just bought a new PC and the first thing I did was uninstall Norton and get AVG.

That reminded me to add my OOTP folder to the "Don't scan these folders" list in my Norton Antivir

I had to set up a fresh Windows and all on my computer after the release. I've installed Norton (which I'm using since years BTW, but only their anti-virus tool) and forgot that setting. Strongly recommended! I guess each anti-virus software has such a setting to exclude certain folders from being scanned. It also makes OOTP faster.
