random catchers batting leadoff

I'm not sure if this counts as a bug, but I've noticed that with surprising frequency -- maybe 10-15% of the time -- the computer will decide to bat a slow-moving, not-very-good catcher in the leadoff slot. (Not a la Jason Kendall and his high OBP: I mean slow catchers who don't really hit well either.) Otherwise the lineup selection algorithm seems to be pretty good, so is this quirk fixable?

I'm not sure. We just got the beta patch on Friday, for release next Friday, and I haven't got that far in testing yet.

The problem still exists in the new patch.

I should be specific here. The problem is not that the listed lineups in the Lineups screen will lead off random catchers (at least, I don't think it is). It's that whenever a team re-shuffles its lineup for a game -- because a starter is tired, or because a backup is on his "every 3rd game" start, or because of a DtD injury or something -- the computer has a strong tendency to move that random catcher to the leadoff spot. And of course, that comes up a lot.

I wonder if it is a bug or just a bad decision by the AI manager. I would try going to the lineup editor, taking whoever is being rested that day off the depth chart completely, and then ask the manager and the bench coach for a lineup and see if they give you the same jacked up lineup. Not that this solves the problem, but it may tell you a little more about the source of the problem.

Voxpoptart, have you tried Burgandy's suggestion? It seems a useful test.

I agree, that was a good suggestion. Thanks. The results:

If you mean "remove him from depth chart and don't fill in the spot at all", it won't generate a lineup.

If you mean "remove him from depth chart and move his backup into the starting position", then the answer is no: it generates a perfectly ordinary and reasonable lineup.

Can you post us a screenshot of an AI generated lineup in-game that places a catcher in the lead-off spot, then post us a shot of the catcher's player profile? Thanks.

Well, I'll show you a box score (or more than one) and a catcher profile (or more than one). How do I do this?

I'll steal a post from Kaitaiki:

Know what? It looks like the new patch _did_ fix the problem. Probably not 100%, because I know it wasn't just stubbornness that made me say the problem still existed -- I know I still saw something, perhaps involving my own manager's belief that C Alberto Bernard (Con 9 Pow 8 Eye 9 Speed 4, scale of 20) makes a fill-in leadoff hitter. But I've checked several days of recent box scores and the only two catchers still batting leadoff can really hit. They're a little odd for leadoff choices, but I no longer sense a bug.

So yay. I'm satisfied.

Good enough. I'm closing this thread out, then. If you change your mind, just ask a moderator to re-open the thread. Thanks.
