Unhappy Game Freezes when Generating Picture

Whenever I attempt to change a player's appearance or edit the team colors, the box will pop up that says "Generating Picture..." and then my computer will freeze. I'm unable to alt-tab to any other windows, and ctrl+alt+del does nothing. If I try to click my mouse my computer will beep at me and freeze the cursor too. I've left this screen up for several minutes with no change. I end up having to interrupt the power by removing the battery or unplugging the AC adapter just to reboot my computer.

My system is a Dell Latitude D600 with a 1.6 GHz CPU, Radeon Mobility 9000, and 512 MB of RAM.

The official policy in the Tech Support section of this forum is that the oldest posts are given priority of response. Therefore, bumping is contraindicated down in these nether depths.

Are you experiencing this behavior using the full second patch, version 2.0.2.53?

Does it happen no matter which team's uniform you try to edit? Does it happen in multiple saved games or only one of them? Are you able to see FaceGen pictures normally when not trying to edit them?

Not to speak out of turn here, but that 512MB of RAM is shouting out to me. During the first couple of weeks post-release (before the first patch), there were many FaceGen problems that appeared to be caused by having less than 1GB of RAM. Is that known to still be a problem?

Second patch doesn't fix the crashes, and it happens in every saved game. If I put FaceGen in "troubleshooting" mode then I can sometimes see garbled pictures, but the crash still occurs most of the time, and on the rare occasions I do get through to the screen it happens whenever I try to regenerate or make any changes. "Normal" mode will always crash before it even opens the screen.

I don't really care about FaceGen that much, but what makes this crash extremely annoying is that if I disable FaceGen to try to work around it, I can't access the options to edit team colors and logos... which I shouldn't really need FaceGen for.

FWIW, accessing that function via Team Home -> Options & Ballpark -> Manage Team Colors works fine for me even with FaceGen disabled...

When I disable FaceGen that option disappears. Is there something I'm missing?

I guess Zeyes disabled Facegen for the league only in the league setup, and you disabled it completely in the preferences.

But you're right, even with Facegen disabled you should be able to open that dialog, we have to change that in the game.

So is the 512MB of RAM the reason that FaceGen crashes the game?

No, I've had FaceGen completely disabled* for weeks now, because I kept forgetting to turn it off for each league individually.

* where "completely disabled" = in the OOTP preferences, not via command line parameter, in case that makes any difference

Edit: Do make sure your currently-selected human manager is set to commissioner mode because that does make the team color edit button go missing when it's not activated...

I don't know. All I remember about this was that during the first two weeks post-release there were many (20+) of these FaceGen crashes, and the one thing they all seemed to have in common was 512MB of RAM. (A couple had either 600 or 768, but all were under 1GB and nearly all 512MB.) I don't know whether all of these crashes or freezes matched your description.

This is not my area of expertise, so I should probably shut up now.

I can attest to this. I've had no FaceGen issues, and I run 512 MB.

Anatole, do you have the most recent drivers for your video card?

If you're already using the latest drivers, and you don't mind going to the effort, you could try the two versions just preceding the current one. It's counterintuitive, but on rare occaission has been known to work.
