What to expect from 1880s and 1890s historicals

Hello all, I'm working on a historical replay of sorts, putting real players on fictional teams, starting in the 1870s ...

I'm just curious what to expect in terms of the number of players during this time. I started in 1878 and basically had enough guys for six teams of about 12-14 players each. I then expanded by two teams after a year, getting another 30 players or so coming in.

I know there were several leagues in real life that existed during this time in addition to the National League (maybe some weren't "professional"?). Will I see all of these players coming through before I get to the 1900s? Roughly how many new players come into the league each season?

I've already screwed up once by at first setting my draft at first in November and then switching it to March. I ended up having one draft class come in a year early and then the same guys came up again the next year -- had to delete them out so I wouldn't have 30 duplicate guys...

I think you should see all players that played.
As for how many players you could run a test league and check the # of players available each draft. I can tell you that i have 16 teams in 1884 and with RAH on and i havent seen the famous illegal # of players error message yet.
The key though is that you have to pay close attention to 19th century leagues. You might need to check your game setup after each season.
You will have to experiment with injuries, fatigue, suspensions, active roster size etc. Your players available also might depend on if you have RAH on or not. From what i understand a lot of people start the draft in december.

Forgive my ignorance -- what is RAH? Thanks... good advice, though ...

I have had to restart a few times for various reasons (mostly because I wasn't satisfied with something) and I back up a lot ...

Retire according to history.
you can have historical players retire when they did in real life.
It should be under options in your league setup if you want to use it.
