Historical player-creation modifiers

Historical player-creation modifiers...Does anybody know what happens when this box is checked on the Strategies and Equivalencies page?
Will the historical player that comes from another year have his stats modified so that they are appropriate for the year that is being played.? For example, if Barry Bonds is downloaded to play in 1908, he will hit for much lower average and much less HR power?

Or if the box is checked, will the opposite happen, so that Barry Bonds will hit for a high BA and a lot of HRs even though he will now be playing in 1908?

I have read the explanation in the manual, but it makes no sense to me.
