Suggestion to all you Commishes...
While recently scouting leagues to join and noting how often the available teams were in very bad shape I noticed a lot of leagues had $$ penalties for absent or negligent owners. I don't oppose this practice, but I wanted to suggest that perhaps some of the money taken from a franchise could be "gifted" back to the franchise when a new owner takes over.
Not sure how to implement it, but I think it's worth looking into. Might also help you fill the lousy teams that no one grabs up when you post for new owners. It would give the new owner a little help in rebuilding a sad franchise that has been mismanaged or neglected. |

From the start of your post I thought you were going to suggest that leagues give teams of new owners an injection of cash like sometimes happens in real life. I've read that some leagues do do that so that's a new suggestion though. Personally, I prefer things that can be explained in a story like that. I don't know how you'd write into a story that a team was fined money and that gifted it back when a new owner came. Well, I suppose you could, but an injection of cash for new owners sounds more like something that would happen in real life.
The only thing that has bugged me about that old idea (and I guess it would go for yours as well) is that wouldn't it encourage people to quit and then return to the team under a different handle? I fear it might and so I'm not that big of a fan of it.

I've seen this done in other leagues. In the league I run, I do charge teams $250k for missing 3 sims in a row and don't return the money even if I replace the GM. For a team with $20M in the bank, this isn't a big deal. For teams who are in the red, it makes their situation worse, and in that case I would consider returning the fine.
Thanks for suggesting it. I may change my policy in my league. |

One problem that I noticed in the eMLB is that new owners get saddled with bad teams with bad contracts. These bad contracts act as a millstone around their neck, hurting them competitively for seasons. Sometimes these contracts were an attempt to jumpstart an ailing franchise, sometimes they are the remnant of an attempt to win it all, and sometimes they were the right move with the right guy who tears a labrum.
What we implemented was the concept of a contract buyout. A new GM can buy out one season of one player's contract, and that money comes from the Cash pool. If I recall, it it 20% of the value of the last season. |
