the mystery of Troy Percival and David Ortiz

I imported the 2008 season using the new historical.odb file (1-year recalc). In real life, Troy Percival pitched OK for Tampa Bay in 2008, but just OK. He put up average stats. When I checked his ratings in the editor, though, he imported with ratings that were expected to produce a 6.91 ERA in a modern environment. What's up with that? Would anyone care to venture a guess?

One more mystery to solve. During the same import, David Ortiz was placed on the Boston reserve roster. When I simmed the 2008 season, he never appeared in a single game. How did that happen? What's going on here?

I don't get it. I imported the 2008 season again. Ortiz has some of the best ratings on the team, especially Gap and Power. Yet he is placed on the Reserve Roster with a 1/2 star rating. Under Scouting Reports, however, he is given 5 stars. What's going on here?

What are his fielding ratings? [/brainstorming]

These are the things i'd check:

1: Scouting accuracy - the managers can't use talent they do not see.

2: Do you have the Managers making all the roster moves? If so, that combined with the scouting issue might lead the managers/computer AI to put him down when you might not.

3: What does your computer AI favor? Potential or Veteran track record?

4: Have you enabled the AI to make roster changes?

Has the AI treated Ortiz the same in both Sims? If not, what were the differences?

Hope this helps

I have Scouts OFF, but I'm still able to read the Scouting Report. It is definitely an accurate scouting report, indicating that Ortiz is a "threat" every time he steps to the plate. Regardless, I checked his ratings in the Editor and, as I said, he clearly has some of the best ratings of all players on the roster. That's no surprise, though, is it?

Yes, the AI treated Ortiz the same in each sim (three, actually). He remains on the Reserve Roster all year. He is not even added to the Active Roster when the roster expands on Sept. 1. NOTE: I have Financials OFF, Development OFF, Coaches OFF.

If scouts are off, the scouting report is useless. At the same time, this means the AI knows exactly what his real ratings are, and therefore would have no reason not to play him (since he is on an AL team, so the fact that he has low fielding ratings shouldn't matter that much).

Hmm, actually - maybe you accidentally turned off the DH in the AL? It would be unrealistic, but not implausible that the AI would stick Ortiz in the Reserve Roster if there's no DH (although to be honest, in that case I would expect him to either play 1B anyway, or at least have a place on the bench).
