Who is this (IMO creepy) fellow? Why is there no logo on his cap? Is there another team that wore black and orange uniform numerals and I'm the wrong team entirely? Help, please.

(My first guess, since I found the photo right next to the O'Donoghue [posted above] and two of Blue Moon Odom, was that this was Digger O'Dell [who pitched in SF from '60-'64]. But it doesn't look like him, either, and he never wore #39 in his life.)
The photo in question shows Houston Colt .45s pitcher Dave Giusti, ca. 1963. Here are some other Giusti Colt .45s images alongside a clip of the original photo for comparison.

Wow, I really was chasing the wrong team. Thanks!

Any reason for the lack of logo on the cap? The .45s don't seem to have changed logos or anything like that.

Topps would often airbrush the logos from caps when a player was traded, and they'd sometimes even paint in the new team's logo on the old team's cap.

Giusti went from Houston to the Cardinals though, and that may have been too much for even Topps to try and fake...

A pretty good explanation here: The Fleer Sticker Project: You Can't Call Them ASTROS!

It appears that it was a trademarking/merchandising issue that Topps got right in the middle of and was not resolved until the 1970 set.

Ed Bailey 1956 Reds alternate image

Ah, I knew that Topps would airbrush the traded players' caps; I just thought that the images in the vault were the unaltered ones. I'll be on the lookout from now on. (And thanks to BigYaz for that interesting article about the Astros' legal issues.)

Back to the images, it seems that the only picture on this site of Lomas Edgar "Ed" (or "Gar", as Brosnan calls him in his books) Bailey in a red Reds cap (i.e., pre-1957 and the white caps) is a profile shot. Allow me to offer a better look at Bailey with traditional Cincy headgear (as well as a facepack-sized edit). The image was used for his 1957 Topps card.

Sorry, I don't have the full versions of the three 1963 Colt .45s images I posted before. Here are a couple of others from the next season (1964), courtesy of Pegasus27.

Bob Keegan 1953-color image

Taken on a 1956 visit to New York, it's a more dynamic pose than was used for Bob's 1957 Topps (which is from the same photoshoot), but it's not too great for a facepack upgrade, what with a small head, partially in shadow.

Still, the current facepack pic of Bob is black & white, so an upgrade's an upgrade, I say.

Keegan, btw, is probably the second-best pitcher ever to attend Bucknell. Just slightly behind Christy Mathewson.
