Ralph Lumenti 1957-color image

Taken on a 1959 visit to Comiskey Park. (The Sens also wore these road unis in 1960, but Ralph didn't make it out of spring training that year.)

What is Ralph doing in this pic? Showing off how he starts a double-play? That can't be his pitching motion, can it? He looked so much like an infielder here that I double-checked to make sure this wasn't Julio Becquer gone all pale for some reason. But no, it's Ralph.

Leo Posada 1960-1960 Kansas City A's uniform

There wasn't a very big window to get an in-season shot of Posada in this uniform; Leo didn't debut until September 21st, and the A's changed unis (taking the red out of the scheme, losing the elephant on the sleeve, and going to mono-colored socks) after the season. But the schedule apparently included a late road trip to New York, and Leo got his first Topps picture taken.

Really too far away to be a good shot; even the "facepack"-size is a half-body shot. And not terribly rare, since the A's still wore these uniforms in spring training of 1961 [as seen on Leo's 1961 and 1962 Topps cards, both with the red-letter cap], before changing to white-letter cap in the current facepack for the '61 season. But it's still a different uniform than he'd wear for most of his career, so I figured it was worth including here. Enjoy.

Facepack upgrade, correct size.

My first thought when I saw the Lumenti pic was isn't that Ken Aspromonte, as well.

I'll be a monkey's uncle; that is Aspro! Turns out this is a reversed image, so he's throwing "left-handed". And I thought for sure the "Senators" script was correct, but if you zoom in enough, you'll see that the reversed "o" before the "t" looks like the "a" I thought it was. (And a simpler clue is that the Sens wore the sleeve patch on their left sleeve. Damn.)

A deeper check of the Sens' 1959 schedule shows that Ralph only pitched in the last series of the season, at Fenway Park. (Ralph was a local kid, attended Boston U and U-Mass.) So it was probably a favor for him to be called up; he'd spent most of the year going 15-10 for Minneapolis. And he wasn't at Comiskey, then, after all.

Here is the pic in question, alongside Aspro's 1962 Topps (with him doing the same pose, just not reversed this time).

And here is Baseball Reference's picture of Lumenti, which is still a color pic, and thus perhaps an improvement over the B/W shot of Ralph in the facepack.

(See, I *did* find a color Lumenti, after all. [/bad face-saving attempt]) And wow, am I shocked. Thanks!

Another (lame) excuse.

You know, if the Senators had been using the script "W" on their caps (as they did starting in '63, and the Nationals do today), I would have spotted the reversed image. So it's all the Senators' fault, really. [/lame excuse]

While I'm chatting, does anyone know where to find a color image of Mario Diaz with the 1990 Mets? I've only seen b/w, but if you're a Mets fan, you know why I want "the damn thing!".

Bob Purkey 1954-1965 St. Louis Cardinals uniform

Okay, so the Lumenti/Aspromonte mix-up wasn't my finest hour. Let me make it up to you.

We have plenty of pics of Bob Purkey as a Pirate and a Red, but the only pic on the site of Purk as a Redbird is a b/w shot. So here's #28, in glorious Cardinal colors, at glorious Shea Stadium (*sigh*), along with the facepack edit. (Cute kid in the b/g of the first pic, no?)

Pete Runnels 1951 - Houston Colt .45s uniform

Late in '63, Pete looks around the Polo Grounds for possibly the last time. The second image is the one that was used for Pete's 1964 Topps card.

Nice bulge in your back pocket, Pete. What you got there…Rico Carty's wallet?
