Alyea's A's image in the Batters Pack is taken from his 1972 Topps card, which is an obvious airbrush job. (Cap at an angle that doesn't show the logo, color a too-bright shade of green.) Cheech has a different image, but that also looks to be a custom job on the hat.

But real color pictures of Alyea in A's gear do exist, as seen here.

Another Alyea/A's pic, again in three sizes. In this one, you can see Alyea's uniform number (he's wearing Rick Monday's old #7). Which means that he's wearing a 1971 uniform (the A's removed the numbers from the fronts for '72), which means that these are spring training pictures, with the A's wearing the previous year's duds.

Which begs the question of why, if Topps took pictures of Alyea during 1972 Spring Training, they broke out the airbrush for his 1972 card? The set was still released in "series" in 1972; they could have held Alyea back for one of the later editions and used the pictures from ST. I don't know, maybe they hadn't planned on sending the photog to Arizona and just went ahead with the plan to airbrush in Alyea's hat. Or maybe they were disappointed that Alyea's face is in shadow in both of these pictures. (And really, what kind of photographer doesn't know how to position a player so his face isn't in shadow? Perhaps the pictures were sent in by an amateur "stringer" at A's camp? Weird.)

Anyway, here it is, in three sizes again.

Unlike with the A's pics above, I'm not filling a need here; there's nothing wrong with Alyea's Twins pic in the Batters Pack. I just found a bunch of Twins pictures of Alyea in the Topps archive right after the photos above and figured I'd post them.

So if you just happened to be thinking "Man, I wish I had more pictures of Garrabrant Ryerson Alyea in a Minnesota Twins uniform", well…this is your lucky day.

There are plenty of pics of Charlie, even plenty of pics of him as a Dodger. But most of those show him as a serious, grizzled veteran.

But…damn! Checkout the sideburns on the kid here! Not to mention the snazzy high-cut socks. Yes, it definitely was 1970.

I'm about six months late with this, but in the spring, when okcochise was doing his 1969 team sets, there was apparently some difficulty finding "black hat" 1960s pictures of Bucs (such as Oliver) who were more famous and more photographed in the 1970s (with the mustard hat). Some early shots of Scoop were found, but his face was shadowed in most of them.

Here is a nice portrait shot, albeit watermarked.



I did not know that Al's dad died the day he was called up to the bigs. That's sad.
