Rudy's in the Pitchers' Pack as an Angel (and Baseball-Birthdays posted a lovely 1969 image upthread), but that's as a California Angel. Rudy debuted in 1965 for the Los Angeles Angels—

—wait, what? The Angels were "California" in 1965, it's in the encyclopedias that way! Rudy's Baseball-Reference page even says so.

Well, apparently the name change happened in-season, on September 2, 1965. Once Gene Autry had finalized the move to Anaheim, he changed the name, immediately. Even though the Angels were still playing their home games at "Chavez Ravine" (to be renamed Dodger Stadium once the renters were out). Huh.

(I didn't know this until about an hour ago. I was like "that's the wrong cap…unless it's a spring training picture in the 1964 uniforms…but that's a big-league park. What's going on?" But Rudy was with the team all year, both the "Los Angeles" and "California" versions. So the "LA" hat is not anachronistic, after all. Huh.)



I also have another image, but Topps watermarked the heck out of his face here. I don't know how to remove watermarks, but perhaps someone more skilled will take a shot?

Ken only played 2 games for the White Sox. I have these 2 pictures of him and the first one has watermarks also. Can someone remove this mark?

Did I say I was out of "not-quite-Expos" pics? Apparently I was fibbing.

The Expos snagged Rios off the roster of the Mets' AAA Jacksonville affiliate in the Rule V draft after the 1968 season (hey!) and gave him a shot in spring training, but sold him to their expansion brethren on March 25th for an "undisclosed" amount of cash.



Rios apparently had a thing for bat racks; his 1970 Topps card shows him inspecting KC's array of lumber. But he couldn't find enough hits in any bat, never making it back to the bigs after 1969.

Rios died in 1995, back home in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. In 2006, a morbidly-minded Missouri mediaperson discovered that the Royals led the 1969 expansion teams in deceased alumni, with 16 Royals, as of that date, who were off the list for "reunion' events. (Ex-Royals list, as of 2006: Jerry Adair, Ken Brett, Al Cowens, Moe Drabowsky, Joe Foy, Aurelio Lopez, Jerry May, Aurelio Monteagudo, Don O'Riley, Vada Pinson, Darrell Porter, Dan Quisenberry, Rios, Ken Sanders, Tony Solaita, and Chris Zachary.)

So the Expos may be dead, but the (individual) Expos mostly live on!

(Pardon the mortality notes; I was just leafing through my 2000 Mets yearbook and seeing Tommie Agee and Tug McGraw at the 30th Anniversary of 1969 celebration in there…)

The Royals are up to 31 deceased former players as of today (by 2006 they were actually up to 20 -- and Ken Sanders wasn't one of them -- he's still alive.

My main collection contains square pictures (4 x 4 inches). Not the best for portrait size photos...
