new York highlanders 1903
I am starting my first historical sim with historical transactions on. I am assuming that this means that the Highlanders will become the Yankees. That Babe Ruth will someday join the team. etc.
Here we go. |

I am playing out each game.
I have also been reading about the dead ball era and find that my approach is different than managing modern day games. I am, however, much quicker to use my bullpen than my competitors. I am interested to see how this will impact individual stats and team wins/losses. This is the first time I've gone back this far. I am enjoying it. Is this the best place to report on my progress? Should I blog? |

April 1903
April 1903
After the first month of the season, this is how things look: Highlander Highlights: Twenty-eight year old rookie catcher Monte Beville is leading the team with a .348 average. Ernie Courtney (.324/.395/.353) had a six game hitting streak. Willie Keeler (.273/.368/.545) leads the team (and league) in HRs with two. Clark Griffith leads the pitchers at 2 0 with an ERA/WHIP of 2.25/1.35. Jack Chesbro is still looking for his first win of the year. Across town, Christy Mathewson (Pitching for the NL Giants) is leading all the majors with 33 strikeouts in 34.2 innings. |

Posting Print Out
I tried to post a print out of the ML Standings page.
I copied the screen into the word document. Typed my text and then copied and pasted into the thread. The copy of the ML Standings page did not transfer over. Why not? |

Struggling Through May
The Highlanders have hit a rough patch. Boston and Cleveland are beating them up and they are sliding down in the standings.
Tannehill has not found a groove. have attached the latest box score. The winning pitcher for Cleveland gave up 5 runs (none earned) in 9 innings. Which causes me to pause and wonder, what's the most unearned runs ever given up in a game? |

I ran a Highlanders/Yankees dynasty that lasted almost 50 years. Feel free to read if you want:

June 1903
New York Highlanders
June 1903 June was a tough month. The wheels really fell off the team bus with the rest of the league (except the Senators) rushing past the Highlanders on the race to the pennant. Frustration grew with each loss. Four losses came because of unearned runs. Because the Deadball era has a dearth of home runs, pitching, running and DEFENSE are important. The four unearned losses this month prove that point. Kid Elberfeld jointed the team on June 10 in a trade where we said goodbye to Ernie Courtney and Herman Long. Remember, I have historical transacton on so Im not the one making these trades. In fact, the only changes Im making involve occasionally changing a starting pitcher. Im also bringing in relief pitchers more often and sooner. Im not sure how July is going to play out. But I would hope to see fewer games lost because of defensive miscues. Also, given the effectiveness of the bullpen, Id like to see the number of relief innings up. Team Statistics April: 5 3 May: 13 13 June: 9 - 18 Batters are leading the league in strikeouts with 204. Pitchers trying to outdo the hitters but can only muster second in the hits allowed standings. The only real highlight is a third place bullpen ERA of 2.15. What is nice is I am aggressively using my bullpen. Team Leaders Batting Willie Keeler .288/.348/.416 Jimmy Williams .286/.318/.423 Monte Beville .261/.301/350 Pitching Jack Chesbro 7 9 2.63 Clark Griffith 4 5 3.99 Harry Howell 5 4 2.51 Jesse Tannehill 7 7 3.27 Standings Cleveland Naps 41 23 Detroit Tigers 40 25 1.5 GB Boston Americans 37 28 4.5 Phil. Athletics 34 29 6.5 Chicago White Sox 31 32 9.5 St. Louis Browns 29 35 12 Highlanders 27 34 12.5 Wash. Senators 14 47 25.5 Thank God for the Senators Highlights of the Month Deacon Philippe of the Pittsburgh Pirates threw a no-hitter against the Boston Beaneaters. On June 22 the Highlanders beat the Naps 2 0 in a game where neither team scored an earned run. AL Batter of the Month: Elmer Flick of the Naps NL Batter of the Month: Jimmy Sheckard of the Superbas AL Pitcher of the Month: Rube Waddell of the Athletics NL Pitcher of the Month: Sam Leever of the Pirates AL Rookie of the Month: Lee Tannehill of the White Sox NL Rookie of the Month: Jimmy Sebring of the Pirates |

August 1903
New York Highlanders
August 1903 I missed a July recap. I had been playing out each game. I checked my age and realized that if I wanted to get through the entire Highlanders Yankees history playing through with historical transactions this approach would take me well too long. I will now only play out the games when the Highlanders/Yankees are in contention. (No more than ten games back). Once it gets to that point, Ill just sim games to the end of the month and then do my reviews. My goal is to play through to the present. Checking my wins/losses and statistics against historical statistics. Then go back and begin again but play in GM mode to see if I can replicate or exceed what happens historically. Probably a rather long project. Team Statistics April: 5 3 May: 13 13 June: 9 - 18 July 13 14 August: 13 - 13 Batters are no longer leading the league in strikeouts. They have dropped to third. Certainly a positive development. The team still doesnt hit very well. Seventh/sixth place with a .236/.285/.318 line. Pitching is a bit better. Third and fourth in most statistical catagories. The bullpen ERA has slipped a bit to 2.41 Team Leaders Batting Jimmy Williams .269/.316/.383 Willie Keeler .262/.326/.356 Wid Conroy .240/.284/.350 Monte Beville .241/.291/.335 Willie Keeler .288/.348/.416 Jimmy Williams .286/.318/.423 Monte Beville .261/.301/350 Pitching Jessie Tannehill 14/11 2.85 Jack Chesbro 13/15 2.27 Clark Griffith 9/12 3.12 Harry Howell 8/10 2.69 Elmer Bliss 2/2 11 Saves 1.21 Jack Chesbro 7 9 2.63 Clark Griffith 4 5 3.99 Harry Howell 5 4 2.51 Jesse Tannehill 7 7 3.27 Standings Detroit Tigers 73 44 Cleveland Naps 69 46 3.0 Boston Americans 69 47 3.5 St. Louis Browns 57 61 16.5 Highlanders 53 61 18.5 Chicago White Sox 53 65 20.5 Philadelphia 52 64 20.5 Wash. Senators 38 76 33.5 The Highlanders climbed past the Sox and the As but the excitement is with the top three battling for the pennant. Cleveland Naps 41 23 Detroit Tigers 40 25 1.5 GB Boston Americans 37 28 4.5 Phil. Athletics 34 29 6.5 Chicago White Sox 31 32 9.5 St. Louis Browns 29 35 12 Highlanders 27 34 12.5 Wash. Senators 14 47 25.5 Thank God for the Senators Highlights of the Month |

It's 1904 Now. Things are better
After a tough 0 - 6 start (Boston was 10 - 0 before its first loss), the Highlanders have found their groove.
In the last game they lit up Eddie Plank for 9 runs in .2 innings. Plank left the game with a -10 score. I've never seen a negative score before. |
