Question for hockey gurus: playoff formats
Greetings all,
A quick trio of questions for the resident hockey experts, particularly those familiar with college/university hockey and hockey leagues in Europe, as I prepare to restart work on my customizable playoffs proposal for FHM. (I had to unfortunately shelve the project for awhile due to real-life issue.) First question: Are there any hockey leagues which use the split-season format? While this format is commonly used in minor league baseball, as far as I'm aware its use in hockey was limited to the first two seasons of the NHL. Second question: Do those hockey leagues which use promotion and relegation also have playoffs to determine which teams get promoted or relegated? If yes, could you explain how those playoffs work? Third question: Do any hockey leagues use the double-elimination format? This format is widely used in U.S. college baseball, but I have no idea if it's used in college or other hockey leagues. I'm not sure at this point if I can include split seasons and promotion/relegation playoffs into my proposal, but I at least want to get background info so I can think over how to accommodate these particular playoff angles in any future revised/expanded proposal. Thanks! ![]() ETA: Added a third question. It had slipped my mind when I made the initial post. Last edited by Le Grande Orange; 06-04-2013 at 08:24 PM. |

Some do. The best example I can give is Sweden. Each year, a playoffs series (the Kvalserien) is played between the 2 worst Elitserien teams and the 4 best Allsvenskan ones. Each team plays each other twice. When all the games are played, the top two teams earn the right to either remain in or promote to the Elitserien. The others play in the Allsvenskan the next year. This is a pretty interesting formula actually.

Well, the response has been... underwhelming. Maybe I put this thread in the wrong section?

Mostly it is because hockey leagues dont realy work like that
north america is almost exclusively straight playoff rounds. the number of games may change per league but not the concept europe is the same, only the relegation system suggested above is generally how it applies in most countries. their are a couple of exceptions to the rule, (and the world hockey championship only worked on a round robin format for a long time) but generally playoffs are playoffs worldwide |
