I have had the game for awhile, but had no time to start...
...that is changing...I want to immerse myself in the game, and would love some solid recommendations...for instance, should I start with real or fantasy players? Any ideas are appreciated. |

Go with Random Debut, while you may know half the players it's doubtful you knew you was the backup middle IF for the 1932 Red Sox. He may become your best player. I prefer a mix of fictional & historical. My 1st league was fictional.

I personally play mostly fictional universes - I don't like bringing over any real feelings I may have for certain real players into my sim. I do like to play some random debut from time to time though.
If you're starting out, I would recommend a small league - not too many teams, that way you can keep track of who has what, rivalries, etc. I personally feel fictional is better for this but it's up to you. |

For your first league, you've got to go fictional. A small league, as Peregrine suggests, will be much more manageable, and easier to experiment with. Plus, it eliminates the possibility of, say, the Red Sox and Yankees both falling into last place, or Justin Verlander becoming a washed-up AAA pitcher. I've seen far too many posts about how OOTP "isn't realistic" because real-life players don't match their real-life performances. Don't fall into that trap; play fictional first and learn how the development engine and Talent Change Randomness work.
I would also suggest using preset financials by importing whatever year you want. Don't mess with custom finances until you're comfortable with the game - they can be a pain in the rear end to get working properly. |
