Scouting director recommendation question
Relative newcomer to the game, and have a question about scouting director recommendations.
I'm in the middle of the draft now, and in every round so far my scouting director has recommended a player that isn't the best player on the board, either by his recommendation or the OOTP ratings. In most cases there seem to be considerably better players available. Now I've noticed from browsing this forum that this generally isn't particularly trustworthy. But one thing I have noticed is that every time I've ignored my scouting directors suggestion, the player he recommends is selected with the very next pick. Is this some sort of bug? Or is the scouting director somehow getting it right despite the numbers suggesting he isn't? |

Depends on what your scouts strengths and weaknesses are. He may suck at Amateur. I ask for my scouts recommendations but if I dont like that player for whatever reason I select my own guy. I am the GM. I am in charge. So the guy I picked has trouble with the curve, big deal he is gonna be a good solid 1B for the next 10 years.

Def not a bug. *Edit here: I have never noticed that the pick from my Director is always taken by the following team. I will watch more closely. Note that sometimes if you click (sometimes repeatedly) the recommendation hot button your scout will change his recommendation to another player. That is why I originally said it was not a bug.*
You get the joy of having 4 different views of each prospect! 1. You can pick off the OSA scouting. 2. You can pick off your scouting staff ratings. These do not match with your Director's recomendation. It is an oddity that has been around since I have been playing OOTP. A somewhat helpful take here is to compare your scout's take with the OSA. If both are showing some potential in the same areas it CAN point to a greater chance of successful development. 3. You can take your Director's recommendation. I view this as your Director advising you of a 'sleeper' pick. Everyone sees him as junk but your Director sees something in him that may pay off in the future. 4. Or you can just pick a guy with a cool nickname! I often alternate which view I follow for each pick depending on what my own 'expert' knowledge tells me to go. *Another (just my experience) tip: Be wary of pitchers with poor 'control' potential. I have drafted many a pitcher with electric stuff and waited for them to hit the broad side of a barn door only to be disappointed in the end (a select few made it through to the majors). The draft process should leave you feeling that it is clear as mud! Last edited by '94 EXPOS; 01-15-2014 at 08:05 PM. |

There is an option 'somewhere' in league setup for the AI to use pre-defined value for drafting, there is a column in the master.csv named Draft value, which it appears to be a career value of cumlative stats based on some formula, a lot of that value appears to be career games palyed as the player with the highest value is Pete Rose who played the most career games, I do not think anybody drafting an all time team in a lg recalcing every yr or 3 or not at all would pick Pete #1 overall but the AI will if that box is checked

i can vouch on the next team picks the Scout recommendations. I would says probably 70-80% of times in first 5 rounds.
as for OP's question i have check later on these guys, and there is no trend. Sometimes they were better than the one i picked, but many times not, like you would expect from prospects. so the Scout does not know better Last edited by le receveur; 01-15-2014 at 08:16 PM. |

Just like IRL, when teams just don't ever go BPA the entire draft...

how would team know what my scout's recommendation that i overrode in RL? if 70% my guys recommendation, who i don't believe to be BPA ended up being the next pick, i would be suspicious there was a leak in my war room ...

As for the Rec being the AIs next pick, I've never even thought to look for that, since, as with most things AI, I don't use it. If true - that's weird. I wonder what would happen if you played with scouting off and used pure ratings. I bet those scouting director recs would end up suddenly being BPA or close to it.

That definitely doesn't ALWAYS happen.
I once had a draft where the scoutind director's reccomendation was the same player for three straight rounds. (Eventually I picked him.)
