Resigning young players question

If I have a stud that I love on my team, should I bother trying to lock them up long term? I noticed that I can resign a 22 year old but at the same time it says (contract automatically gets renewed). But not knowing anything about how contracts are structured in MLB through the years for players, how do I know if I should sign a player or just let my young guys get automatically renewed?

where can I see the information on how the contract strcuture for players at a certain age, etc, is it all standardized?

Just wondering, thanks!

most players will get their contract automatically renewed for near league minimum their first 3 years in at the major league level before going through arbitration for anothet 3 years before being eligible fpr free agency. Once in arbitration their salaries start to rise quite a bit and once they hit free agency theyll be asking for the big money. Usually I try and lock guys up in year 3 or 4 and try and get what would be their first couple free agency years at a discount

Since you called him a stud, I'd sign him after his first year of arbitration eligibility. But take a close look at his development and scouting reports. Also, pay attention to his intangible attributes like greed, intelligence, work ethic, and leader ability. He might be a great ballplayer early on, but will his progression over the next few seasons warrant spending on him sooner?

Some players flame out quickly. Some are more prone to injury. Some get greedy. Some are not as loyal.

Also, if your team has enough players with higher leadership attributes, he's more likely to keep in line.
