What stats do I need to look for?

Ok, so I am new to baseball and to give a background of my knowledge, I never played it nor seen a real game or a full game on telly. I just saw a video that explained the basics like what the positions were and how teams score (really really basic).

I was wondering how do I know what players are good for what positions?

This wikipedia link explains it all quite well. Especially the section MLB Statistical Standards which gives you a basic idea of what numbers make a good hitter/pitcher/fielder.

Welcome to baseball my friend!

If you truly are very new to baseball, I suggest doing some study on the side. First, start with reading the online manual. Then, go to a local library or buy a book or two that deals with the basics of baseball. One specific book I can recommend is Baseball between the Numbers. Finally, continue to post any questions about baseball or the game in this forum or in Talking Sports forum. We're all here to help.

Additionally, baseball has stats for almost everything. A recent trend has been looking more at a batter's OPS as opposed to their batting average to determine their effectiveness. FIP is also a good stat when measuring pitchers.. all of these stats and more can be easily found online.

ok. Thank you very much. The game seems to have no problem running windowed or alt+tabbing so I have google ready. That wiki link is helpful and I will bookmark it for now and currently checking the screens and kind of getting to know what. In terms of stats I set the option to 100% scouting so the ratings will be accurate but as I have said, I think I can trust the stars but I kind of want to be able to have a glance at the numbers to ensure that I know what to look out for. I am used to having in FM where I could highlight key stats for a position and see if it is good or not but I have no clue here.

A question though, I know baseball is complicated due to other minor leagues, I want to play a fictional league and I was wondering what is the optimal setting for a very small league that I want to play and just learn from it before stepping in to the big leagues and learning the intricacies of trading, league rules and multiple leagues?

I would suggest you just set up a very simple fictional league with perhaps 16 teams, and no minor leagues. That way, you can get a little bit of experience with baseball and managing games and so forth, without having to worry about the additional complexity of minor-leagues.

Just an idea though!

According to OOTP itself, OOTP MLB play (modern and historical) outnumbers OOTP fictional play three to one.

Five thousand thanks for a non-modder? I never thought I'd see the day. Thank you for your support.

I would go smaller, mabee 2 subleagues with 4 teams, 8 total. Try atleast one minor level. You will begin to learn how much better major league players are to minor leaguers

Also to all, you will lose a guy who knows hardly anything about baseball if you use only acronyms when talking about stats. Refer to OBP as On-base Percentage(OBP) for example.

Welcome to the great game of baseball!!!
