Eddie Leon 1968

Here is one of The Great White Whales of color baseball photography, popping up out of nowhere in a collection I just obtained:

Eddie Leon, with the Yankees - for whom he played exactly one half-inning as a defensive replacement at shortstop on May 4, 1975. He was released the next day.

Fittingly, at first glance the image makes no sense. Leon is shown at Shea Stadium (the Yankees' home 1974-75) but is wearing a road jersey. At first I thought this might have been shot the day of the annual "Mayor's Trophy" exhibition game the Yankees and Mets played, but the 1975 edition came ten days after Leon had been released.

I'm now guessing this was from a workout in New York before the season began on the road. In any event, Eddie Leon in color:

$64,000 Question: Don Dennis or not???

The following "infielder pose" appeared on Topps Vault..HX899. The "mystery" player has his name beginning by DE...on his shoe's flap, and has an identical mole on his left cheek..just as Don Dennis, Cardinals mid-relief Pitcher 1965-66, whose Topps pics preceeds him at HX897-898. Dennis has never played an Infield position in Organized BB, but...on his 1963 minor league card with the Tulsa Oilers, he also has an unusual pose. Can anybody confirm or else give another name? Thanks in advance.

I Think..

Think, think, think... - that's career minor league third baseman Art Deras, who was in camp with the Cardinals several times in the mid-60s. Having gone through everybody else who would fit alphabetically next to Dennis in the Topps Vault sequence, he's the best bet.

This is Deras from the 1965 and 1966 Cardinal yearbooks.

Thanks for your search and great find !! Very nice pic of Deras. But I'm not sure 100% that it's the same guy. The exact similarity between the moles on the left cheek of Dennis and Mystery Man makes me wonder. Deras does not seem to have a mole. Still, your enthousiastic collaboration is much much appreciated! I sure will take Deras in consideration too. Many thanks!!

Dennis

I think it really is Don Dennis. The mole is there; the ears are the same, mouth; brows; nose; there is no reason to believe that a pitcher could not have his photo taken like an infielder; pitchers field grounders too. The ears look different to me on Deras. Course as they said in Magnificent Seven and Rio BRavo movies when comparing how fast two gunfighters were; I would hate to live on the difference! LOL

Topps Vault strikes again. A week or so with the 1976 Angels and yet here he is.

(BTW I think you're all right about Dennis. That sure doesn't look like an infielders' glove)

Coincidentally Topps Vault just posted the Duncan pic that was used for these rare cards....

I'm hoping Merkle or anyone else might have the image for Dan Meyer as a Tiger? Thanks in advance!

Came over to the O's in a June deal with the Halos for Dyar Miller that year. This beats what I have so maybe it helps someone else courtesy of Topps Vault....

I have looked arout OOTP and have not seen a discussion board per se, but this was something I wanted some feedback from.
I read on Bob Lemke's blog that he had been made "custodian" of the McCarthy Collection of photos, thousands and thousands of perfect, non-Topps photos. I asked him about them in an email this past week, and he said that an advanced collector had acquired them and donated them to Cooperstown.
I think I actually screamed NOOOO!
Having required some images from the Joe Engel Collection, which was donated to the Hall in 1969-70, for my Arcadia book, I was only able to afford purchasing usage rights for nine photos, even with the Hall's special arrangement with Arcadia. Those images cost more than everything else I acquired to put the book together, even though they had not been touched by the Hall in all that time.
So my roundabout question is this: are the thousands of McCarthy images now lost to us, those who want to see them and possibly use them? Does anyone know if they are being catalogued and/or made available? If I am totally clueless about this, please let me know that, too.

Just found this pic on John's baseball-birthday site with some apparent assistance from Buccos. However if someone has an applicable pic of Jeff solo, that would be appreciated! Thank you!
