Todd Noel
Pitcher Todd Noel was a first round draft pick by the Chicago Cubs in 1966. Given today's date and his surname, I couldn't resist posting his photo.
In minor league terms, Todd never rose above the High A level, but the apex of his career was making the New York Yankees' spring roster in both 2000 and 2001. The Yankees apparently thought enough of his talent to consider it worth protecting him on their 40-man roster. |

1959 Chattanooga Lookouts Made an earlier inquiry for him in a Senators spring uni; never played in majors, but was a closer when closing wasn't cool. A light-skinned Cuban who was able to play in segregated Southern Association. (image owned by the poster; free to be used by anyone) |

Bob Saban -- Chattanooga
Pitched briefly with Chattanooga in 1958-60, but won 121 games in the minors without ever making the majors. Best years: 16-9, 2.17, in 1957, 15-10 for Charlotte in 1961, 15-7 for Charlotte in 1956.

Fred Taylor -- Lookouts
Before he chose coaching basketball for a career and began a Hall of Fame career at his alma mater of Ohio State, Fred Taylor was a young slugger withi the Chattanooga Lookouts.
Baseball reference hasn't gotten around to verifying RBI stats in the Southern Assocation in 1951, but Taylor had 103 RBIs that season. And, at 6-3, he was a pretty effective first baseman. Image owned by poster and sharing freely. Last edited by rico43; 01-07-2015 at 08:25 PM. |

1959 LOOKOUTS: Lumenti, McAvoy, Kaat
The 1959 Chattanooga Lookouts were well-stocked in left-handed pitchers.
Ralph Lumenti, Tom McAvoy, Jim Kaat (left to right) pitched a combined 946 major league games: But Kaat had 898, Lumenti 47, McAvoy 1. Image is owned by poster, who shares it with this community. I hope this helps take the edge off of the anger many towards me over the dropped 1966 Braves. Last edited by rico43; 01-07-2015 at 08:59 PM. |

Alan Grandcolas
Portrait of a journeyman catcher. According to Baseball Reference, he played for 17 teams over 10 seasons, all before his 30th birthday, without ever reaching the majors. Photo from 1959, as a Chattanooga Lookout, out of baseball by 1963 and died by 1993. Photo owned by poster, sharing freely. |

Some Career Minor Leaguers
From the 1/20/15 Topps Vault posting.
The Cardinal lefty is Danny Jaster - the younger brother of NL pitcher Larry. He was in camp with St. Louis as early as 1966 and as late (as here depicted) 1972. Not a day in the majors. Same for the Giant here - right-handed pitcher Hal Jeffcoat, Jr., who also answered to Bucky. He was a top San Francisco prospect and was on the spring roster in '67 and '69 at least. This shot would be from 1969. The Cincinnati pitcher is John Jackson, depicted with the Reds in Spring Training 1972. And from the Dodgers, lefty Dennis James, who had repeated stints on the spring roster - this image would be from 1970 or 1971. But who is the Cleveland righthand hitter? He is among the "J" names, and that's clearly a 1972 image. There were very few "J's" in their system in 1972 (and this is not catcher Larry Doby Johnson). So my guess work is, it could be a first baseman named Ray Johnson, who looked like he had a good enough year in the minors in 1971 to conceivably merit a non-roster invitation. |

I took another tack in searching things out. His bat says "Covert," which no doubt would belong to Danay Covert, the Indians' 4th-round pick in 1968 and who was in their farm system through the 1974 season.
Covert was a righty hitter and a big 6-foot-4, but the one head shot I found that was ID'd as Covert at Texas seemed to be that of caucasian with less kinky hair. But I think, at least, I've identified the bat! |

Lyle Wells (this fellow may have misidentified this. Lyle Wells played for Oakland not SF in 1923 - could be another Wells)
