Quickie Suggestion: Player of the Game stats

Since we're all stat junkies, I'd think keeping track how many times a player is named the Player of the Game would be a cool little feature. Just a simple leaderboard, perhaps broken down by just pitchers and hitters.

Performance of the Day could be done as well, with a 3, 2, 1 points system.

A hitter can win the player of the game?

The greater % of the time when I see a hitter win player of the game it's a player on the losing team.

Hitters win POG often.

It just depends on whether it is a high scoring game or a low scoring game.

As another thread has discussed in great detail - no need to recapitulate here - "Player of the Game" honors often go to someone whose performance wasn't especially outstanding. Starting pitchers with game scores in the 50's and relievers who throw two or three meaningless innings are the most cited examples. Also, unless a league is heavily weighted toward offense, hitters tend to be underrepresented.

There'd be no harm in OOTP's keeping track of the number of times someone got this goat feather, but it wouldn't mean a lot.

Markus could make it meaningful if POTG would increase a player's popularity the more he gets the award.

I'd much rather see an option to manually select POTG for my team when playing out games..and let the AI do it's thing for the rest.

Just for fun, I parsed through some of my dynasty's historical records.
  • Season 1: PotG was a pitcher 66.5% of the time (league run environment 4.0 runs per game)
  • Season 2: PotG was a pitcher 61.6% of the time (league run environment 4.2 runs per game)
  • Season 3: PotG was a pitcher 60.0% of the time (league run environment 4.4 runs per game)

Which is a FAR cry from the idea that hitters are never chosen.

Well, yeah -- obviously hitters can be chosen; I don't think his tongue-in-cheek remark was to be taken literally.

Going back to OP suggestion, the proposed leaderboard really would need to be broken down by just pitchers and just batters; it'd look pretty goofy if it were a combined table since the counts just won't be comparable. I processed one of my dynasty's seasons, and came up with:

- out of the top 25 most-named PotG, 24 were starting pitchers, and 1 was a position player

- the only position player that could crack the top 25 was the guy putting up a monster .368 / .451 / .725 / 62 HR / 14.2 WAR season (and played all 162 games, to boot)

- even a shlubby 9-15, 5.24 ERA, -9.8 VORP starter racked up more PotG (10) than any other position player aside from the 62 HR MVP dude

- to give some idea of scale, the player with the most PotG in this season was 24, with three players getting 20+ PotGs

- the next position player had 9 PotG, and then a few other position players started showing up with 6-7 PotG for the season

Edited original post to include "Performance of the Day" as well.

Sure, they are meaningless stats but they are MORE STATS!
