I used to love Baseball Mogul. It was like a quick, easy Baseball GM fix. Around 2009 I dove into OOTP and there was definitely a learning curve for me. Initially, I didn't like getting bogged down in a lot of the minutiae they have built into the game. I found myself saying things like,
"Who cares that my AA batting coach's contract is expired?!" "Why am I spending an hour of my time sweating over the Rule V draft?!" "Stop pestering me with these trivial matters!" And even though the game STILL gets on my nerves when some tiny little detail pops up to interrupt my game, I never went back to BBM. |

I have a quick question. When is the last time you can adjust your 40 man roster to prevent people from being eligible for the rule 5 draft?

It depends on when you have your draft set. You can adjust the roster anytime before the draft. Even the day of as long as you don't start the draft.

I too came from BM to OOTP. And I was overwhelmed at first. In fact, I tried to start playing about 10 times, got frustrated, and went back to BM. But eventually I got the hang of it, and the reward for that effort was more than worth it. Don't get me wrong, I like BM, and it will always have a special place in my heart. And I still play it occasionally a little. But OOTP is where my serious baseball gaming occurs.
For me the hardest part was the interface. Someone mentioned about the complexities of all the real life rules. That's true, but the beauty of OOTP is you can play with all of those complex rules, some of them, or almost none at all. You could start a game without minors (using a reserve roster) and turn off options, finances, etc. and have it be just as easy as BM. But the interface can be intimidating, simply because there are just so many options that finding them all can be daunting. And at first it's easy to be overwhelmed with it all. I would recommend trying a demo (or try OOTP 8, which I think is free for the full version) to get used to the interface. Play a small majors only league without finances, the 40 man roster rule, etc. (IIRC there used to be a quickstart included for just such a barebones start) for a few weeks or maybe even a season. Then once you're comfortable with the interface and being to find where to do what you want to do, increase the complexity of the game itself at your own pace and before you know it you'll be on here sharing your experience with someone asking this same question. And trust me, you'll be telling them it's well worth the effort too.

I started out with version 6.5, so all the complications since then have been incremental to me, but I imagine that for someone just jumping into it right now that the game would appear to be really, really complicated.
