I always have trading on hard and neutral and injuries on normal. Although that feels like cheating because it's fewer injuries than real life. This year I may take it up to high.

I play with trading on Hard, and injuries on High. A lot of people find the high injury setting to be a bit of a bloodbath though - that's what I want personally, but you'll have some unlucky years where you lose 3/5 of your starting rotation to torn UCLs. Your depth will matter a lot.
If you're new to the game, I'd strongly advise you not to change any of the Player Creation or Development settings. They're designed to work well on defaults, and you'd want to know what you're doing if you change them. I only ever change the Talent Change Randomness setting (I often raise it, which makes prospect development less predictable), but it works well on default. The best way to control how challenging the game, in my mind, is to control how much information the game gives you about players. If you're new to the game, I wouldn't recommend reducing that info too much, but once you get familiar with the game, you might move in this direction. You can reduce the reliability of player ratings by playing with scouting on, and by reducing the 'scouting accuracy'. You can also reduce your ability to differentiate between players by lowering the resolution of your ratings scales (on a 1-5 scale, lots of players will look the same if you go only by their ratings, so you have to look at stats). For the ultimate challenge, you could turn ratings off completely and play stats-only, which is what many experienced users like to do, myself included. That can be very challenging, though! |

Yup, injury on high is both exciting and frustrating. Last year I seemed to run into the "he's batting cleanup for the human team - must injure him" problem, where I think I had about 3 weeks in a row my cleanup hitters kept getting hurt. And as always, the year I carry 6 capable OF they all stay healthy, and the year I try to get by with only 3 they all get hurt. I remember one year where I had 6 of my top 7 outfielders all hurt at the same time.
But yes, for a new player, the game plays very well out of the box. The main points I would consider changing from the defaults are the ratings, and really, that's more personal preference whether you like 2-8, 1-10, 1-20, or whatever. I would say start the game with the team you want, look over players, then go change the ratings to something else, and have another look through. Whichever system you feel tells you the right amount of information you want to know about your guys, stick with that. |
