Lineups wonky?

So, I decided to start managing the Cubs, and while I get that Joe Maddon can be a bit wonky, my pitchers are batting eighth? Whaaat? That seems pretty ridiculous.

I was watching the Cubs game yesterday and he mentioned he was going to do that from time to time except with Lester, so maybe not so far fetched...

That may be a feature as some managers are starting to do that. Cool to see thats actually in this year's game, it must be a preference for some managers.

Are the pitcher batting 8th better than most?

Okay, that was not something I was expecting. It's very cool. Nice to see manager preferences having a very real expression in the lineups.

I was actually kinda worried about giving my line up and rotation control over to the manager, but the line ups and rotation they have set are pretty close to my own so that was a huge relief.

Note to self: Princess Kenny was really off-putting.

He actually has two so far by May 26! He's also 0-6 with a 4.99 after ten starts. It's not pretty.

he must be a sabermetrics guy. Advanced statistics say that batting the pitcher 8th is a better idea because you want your #9 to be a decent OBP guy to set the table for the top of the order.

Yes, that's a new feature this year - a rare few managers will have some weird preferences, including batting pitchers in the 8 hole. I think that kind of variety is pretty cool.

My initial impression is that AI lineup construction is better.

Edit:

Better as in not so theoretical or blindly optimal.
