Historical Year Settings - Rotation Size

This has been going back many versions, but when I run a historical sim (be it real or fictional), and have all the automatically adjusted strategy settings checked, the AI roster settings always move to a 5 man rotation as early as the 1915~'s.

Why? How do I prevent that? As is, I have to manually change it every year.

You need to manually change it every year unfortunately or turn off auto changing of strategy settings. Then you just need to set it once.

This was changed from a 4 man rotation starting with OOTP 15 as some players felt old-time pitchers pitched too many innings compared to modern day starters. I think this change was a mistake and is annoying. Back in 1915 pitchers were just pitchers. A 6 man rotation with only 1 in the bullpen works perfectly as well as long as the use starters as relievers is set to allow all pitchers to pitch as needed.

A 4 man rotation with use starters as relievers set to Yes also works perfectly fine for me. 2 or 3 in the bullpen is plenty in this scenario. Also in 1915 rooster sizes were 21 not 25 so you'll have 4 extra players available using the default.

Well, nobody was really using a pitching rotation in 1915, so any setting would, strictly speaking, be unrealistic. Teams would typically carry only about six or seven pitchers, and every pitcher was expected to be a starter and to finish their starts. The top pitchers might start 30-35 games in a season, while the sixth or seventh guy on the staff might only start 5-10 games and pitch in relief the rest of the time. If your pitcher usage is set to "always start highest rested," then your fourth and fifth starters will probably start at historically accurate rates.

In terms of historical pitching rotations, this research paper by David Smith of Retrosheet might be of interest.

Different teams approached the pitching staff in different ways and no matter what setting you put as the default, you're gonna get a lot of it wrong.....

Since all pitchers prior to about 1930 were (with very limited exceptions) considered starters, the most realistic approach for OOTP would be to have pre-1930 rotations equal the number of pitchers on the staff. So, e.g., if there are seven pitchers on the staff, then the pitching rotation should be set to seven. The frequency should then be set to "always start highest rested," and starters should be allowed to relieve. The guys at the top of the rotation would get the majority of the starts, while those at the bottom of the rotation would get a few starts here and there because of double headers, injuries, etc. That might be something to look at for OOTP17.
