Dan Duran Texas Rangers 1981

The Texas Rangers are, in my experience, one of the more poorly covered teams. For some reason I seem to have a lot more gaps in my 80's Rangers than for most other franchises, yet some of them seem to be turning up all of a sudden. Here is a color photo of Dan Duran, a 1B-OF with the perfect name for an 80's ballplayer. Dan saw a little action with the 1981 Texas club. This was posted to ebay by kyles'sportscards, and is yet another of Kyle's many unusual 80's spring training shots.

More Indians.

Are there Indian's photos of Leo Kiely (1960) and Gene Conley (1964)? Conley has an Indians Topps card in 64. Thanks.

Sideburns belong to Gary Medeiros

Thanks loads to pinetarpress who linked my sideburns guy to a photo of Gary Medeiros, who never went above Class A for Oakland but who had "the look."

To find a photo of Conley in an Indians uniform, there has to be an opportunity for such a photo to be taken. Gene Conley spent the entire 1964 spring training season with the Boston Red Sox. His last pitching appearance with them was on April 11. The Sporting News of April 25, 1964 reported "Manager Johnny Pesky announced practically on the eve of the season opener that (Jack) Lamabe had replaced Gene Conley in the starting rotation." The Red Sox' first regular season game was on April 16. Conley was released by the Red Sox on April 21. The Indians signed Conley for their Burlington Class A farm club, as reported in The Sporting News of May 9. It was understood that "he would be added to the Indians' pitching staff if he could work himself back into first class condition," according to The Sporting News of June 6. After two appearances with Burlington, he was released by the Indians on May 31.

It's true that 1964 Topps card #571 has a banner on it which reads "Indians," but the accompanying photo of Conley does not show him wearing a Cleveland uniform. I doubt that he ever donned one.

Politically Incorrect

Gene Conley as an Indian, circa early 50s (from Bob Lemke's blog)

A's Catcher

That is a career minor leaguer, Dennis Haines

Update: no it's not. Read above and below.

Really not sure about that. Here are 4 prior pics of Haines, posted on TV. Nose, chin, eyes....not the same guy.

Now, as for "Sideburns belong to Gary Medeiros", I would sure like to see another pic of that player.

Gary Medeiros

This is the picture Medeiros has on his Linkedin page (in which he references having been a catcher in the Oakland A's organization). Though he never got beyond Class A, he was a 2nd round pick, so its certainly believable that he could have been an NRI in the A's camp. I can't say the picture is definitive evidence but I think it looks more like the catcher in question than does Haines. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear as though Medeiros was in any card sets (major or minor league).

Thank you for the Sporting News information on Gene Conley's "almost" career as an Indian.

Haines caught in Chattanooga when I was around the team and knew it wasn't him. Thought for a while it was Orlando Gomez or Dom Scala but found good images of them in the era. Medeira fits the bill; that is surely not a major league A's batting helmet he's wearing, is it?

Ed Amelung 1984

You just don't see a lot of this Dodger transient of 1984 and 1986 - yet there he is in the new Topps Vault post:

Luis Alvarado - 1977 Mets

Luis Alvarado appeared in precisely one game with the '77 Mets before they sent him back to the team they bought him from--Detroit. But he was with them for a few weeks. And there are several pictures of him with the Mets--most of them of poor quality and in a road uni (taken in Chicago). But here are a couple of Topps Vault beauties featuring the home uni (for inquiring minds that want to know, the latest Vault update also features Alvarado pics with the White Sox and Tigers).

I am speechless. Didn't think these existed.

Granted, they look like someone stored them in a box of gravel for 38 years. But I'll take it.

Non-Roster Invitees - 1966

A few months ago, Merkle posted the lists of non-roster invitees to spring training for a few of the years representing the early 1960's. This morning, I came across the list of non-roster invitees for 1966. National League on the left; American League on the right.
