Team strategy question

How do you figure out the right balance for your team? The only game where I had it perfectly fit to the team I was running crashed. I will say team strategy plays a huge part in how your team plays out through AI, but the wrong strategy for your team could give you wasted season. What types of things do you veterans look for before determining what you're going to do?

i set overall strategy and i also make sure to edit my players' individual strategies. i try to make the ovrall as cookie-cutter as possible and applies to the most players possible. that way i only have to make minor adjustments in the individual strategies. i.e. i may increase patience for my top pitchers etc...

pitch counts for relievers is important if you prefer them to pitch one inning and leave a game. 22-25 is usually pretty good. i like pitch counts on starters too - in some situations if they pitch too many, they can be sub-100% 5-days later. i figure out the number at which this happens and set a pitch count 5-10 lower. 10 will pretty much guarantee it doesn't happen, while 5 will make it unlikely to happen.

pitch around and intentional walks is something i play around with. again it all depends on learning how the game interprets these sliders. does 50 mean it's league average? what is league average? how does it affect when they pitch around or walk? only experience will allow us to learn. most people will make a suggestion that is arbitrarily chosen or based on how they 'feel' real-life works.

the point is, don't just arbitrarily do something. if you do, pay attention to results, and make small changes until you understand the ramifications of your changes.

fit it to your team. my bench rarely hits, so i make sure pinch runners frequency is turned up a bit and pinch hitting for position players is nearly non-existent. that will not be the same for everyone. in general, most of my position player strategies are set to not allow a pinch hitter to begin with. if i have a weak hitting team, i might bump sac bunts up etc etc. bullpen make-up is another thing that will drastically affect how i set l/r matchup etc. i generally have right-handers that have good stuff vs lefties, even if it is lower than against righties it's still higher than a typical LOOGY. so i care very little about l/r matchup.

i'm on the fence about infield shifts. in real life, only the stubborn players will refuse to tap one the other way - the extreme shifts won't last long, if the players apply a modicum of thought. however, this is a game and real-life doesn't mean squat!

pay more attention how the game uses the settings and ignore real life. play to the mechanics the game determines to be 'good' settings.

the only way to know for sure is to start at 50 for everythign and start changing one at a time and simming the same season over and over. then try combinations - see how they influence each other etc etc... that's no fun for me, so for the most part i just go based on my whims - i know i don't follow my own advice.

check out the "<game directory>/data/strategy_profiles"

it has a bunch of historical managers. from what i read, the person who made them made a genuine attempt to use quantitative date to make them. obviously, opinion was still involved. either way, it can give you some cool ideas.

oops, i usually have favor vets/prospects as 50/50. i just edited a coach to get a quick screenshot.
