These are from the latter part of the GR series. I don't think a zip file has been created for them yet, but you can find them here: Index of /images/13076

OK. It's not Bob Anderson. But what about that picture says its an outfielder?

1966 Braves #50

The Topps envelope I referenced earlier, erroneously marked "Ken Nixon, Braves, OF"

Assuming that "Ken Nixon" is from a Milwaukee Braves camp, it must be either 1964 or 1965; the Braves didn't remove the tomahawk from the uniform until 1963, and spring training uniforms are usually the previous season's linen, getting one last go before the new ones get broken in to start the season.

And we've had Charlie Williams, wanna-be Angel, in the Vault before:

Finally, it amused me that we were discussing Ashford & Simpson on the same page. Sadly, Tucker's 1983 Mets were not Solid (As a Rock), but Dick had a lovely vantage point in the Bronx at the start of 1969 to watch the Mets begin to discover that there was Ain't No Mountain High Enough for the Amazins to climb…

1966 Braves' #50. Again.

Ok. I'll do this again. The unidentified Braves player not wearing a cap, in a home uniform, numbered 50, is in an envelope marked "1966" and "Ken Nixon" and "Braves" and "OF." The other images I saw when I examined the envelope show him in an ATLANTA cap.

So let's review, so I don't have to provide these details for a THIRD time.

1. The identification error dates to 1966; it was labeled "Ken Nixon" and included in his file at Topps, even though there was a shoot of the actual Nixon from 1966 in the same file.

2. The other images show him in batting and fly-catching poses.

3. He is shown in an Atlanta cap.

4. All the peripherals - background, sky, uniform tone - match photos we know were taken at Braves' spring training in 1966.

5. The player is wearing uniform 50. All Braves rosters for 1966 show that number assigned to Carl Morton; the player is clearly not Morton, who was a redhead.

6. In case the year is somehow wrong, the player who wore number 50 in the Braves' 1967 camp was Al Cambero. There is a Venezuelan card of him; he looks nothing like this player.

7. Topps did not shoot at the Braves' camp in 1968, and by 1969 they had shed the uniform style shown and were dressed in all-black caps and pinstriped uniforms.

8. Despite some vague similarities in haircut and head shape, there is nothing to support the wild guess that this is former Cubs and Tigers pitcher Bob Anderson, whose professional career ended in 1964 with A's farm teams.

In seeing this post I couldn't remember what it reminded me of. Then it came to me. From my personal printed Topps faux card collection:

Al Autry BRAVES 1976

From the new additions on TV. Must be a rare one.

One career MLB game, one start, 5 IP, 3 ER, gave up 2 HRs...but an historic W for his only digit in the W-L column.

Played 6 years in Royals's minors, before his stint with the Braves.

Tony Auferio

And this a TV shot from one of the 100 oddest stories in there. Seven-year minor league catcher Tony Auferio went to the Cardinals' camp as a player in 1973 and made the team - as the bullpen coach. He spent one year doing that and then went back to the active roster for 1974 - and was photographed by Topps. He spent one more year in the minors and never played, nor again coached, in the majors.

Bill Atkinson, White Sox

Bill Atkinson was a small right handed pitcher who worked out of the Expos' bullpen for a few years in the late 70's. In the winter of 79-80 he went to the White Sox via purchase. Bill didn't make the big league team out of 1980 spring training. He spent the next four years in the Sox minor league chain, pitching badly in 80-81. Bill pitched well in '82 (11 saves, ERA below 3) but didn't get a call up despite the lack of depth in the Sox bullpen, and he was gone after the next season. Here he is in the old-timey uniform of the Sox in the second Bill Veeck era. The shot could be from spring training in either '80 or '81, though I think the former is more likely.

The third one down (black guy with the bat) is Willie Royster, a catcher who got a cup in 1981.

This is just a reminder to the guys who are doing the IDs: don't forget to check for the Topps Vault images on ebay as well. A lot of guys have been posted there with IDs already, and by checking for "completed images" as well you will pull up others going back at least three months. The TV images on ebay are also dated by year, though not always accurately.

I'd also like to add a very hearty thanks to all those who are doing the ID's. I know it's not easy, and the rest of us are grateful. I'd help too if I had more time and knew more than just the 1980s.

So…which way did Mystery Brave bat? It would seem that might narrow the search a bit.

Braves mystery guy

I concede it does not look like Morton, but they both have something in common about their teeth on the left side.
