I do hold runners. Shifting not so much, but I look at the type of hitter they are.

I must admit, I am struggling with the in game play. It's making me want to Sim the whole thing, and if I do that, no point in playing. I hit and run, I bunt, I steal. I pinch hit.

As an aside, maybe it's the Mets. I have SIM'd through two seasons, and one time I had 57 wins, and the other time I had 65. I didn't realize they were that bad. Bad hitting, bad pitching.

I could go on, but I will stop.
There is a tendency to put too many plays on when managing in OOTP. IRL sacrifice hits occur once every every 3.6 games. If you assume a 70% (just my guess) success rate then legitimate attempted sacrifices occur once every 2.5 games. Fake attempts are sadly not available in-game and not counted IRL.

Stolen bases occur once every 1.76 games. Now there are a lot of aborted attempts but at a 72% success rate a resolved play, either a SB or a CS occurs once every 1.27 games. Infield hits just under 1 per game. Bunt hits once every 9 games.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that putting on too many plays might (and should IMO) result in bad outcomes.

Fair comment.

cpu had runners on first and second with nobody out and the heart of the order coming up.. followed by k-k-k. Do you control-alt-delete? If not why not?

When the cpu all-star closer, that hasn't blown a save all year, comes in against you with a 3 run lead and then proceeds to lose do you...

1. control-alt-delete?
2. celebrate your team's great win?

When your good bat, no glove, LF leaps up against the wall to make a great catch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th and 2 outs, to seal the win do you...

1. control-alt delete?
2. celebrate?

How many times have you control-alt-deleted when one of your players made a play that would seem impossible for them to make?
So anectodally of course, my guys do make great plays, and I only ctl-alt-del when the game seems to be wonky. I am under 500, 41-45 to be exact, so I don't do it all that often. But when you hit 3 batters in an inning most with 0-2 or 1-2 counts, that to me is quite out of sorts.

All I can say is I have observed patterns. There was a post about the cpu coming back. I have had that happen a lot. My bullpen ERA is just a shade above 3.00 btw as the Mets.

So set your comments aside and understand the point, in game sim has some things that happen that other people have experience. Things that impact the enjoyment of in game SIM-ing. Do a three game sample like I did of your team, and tell me what you think.

End of the day, I'm new to the game, and these are things I have observed. If I didn't care or didn't want to play I wouldn't. I am sharing my experiences and enjoying a great deal of the game, including in game simming

Well in my dynasty I've played out 4,278 games not including playoffs and spring training. In that time I've had things happen that have impacted my enjoyment of the game because like all of us(?) I don't like to lose. Today my ace was in bad form. In a 2-2 game an inning started with an out then an error (runner on 1st), followed by IF hit, then a bb. Bases loaded with one out and he's struggling a bit. Batter has 20 contact and 5 eye on 20 scale, my P has 15 control. I'm not going to let him walk in a run so I have him pitch to contact. I even visit the mound to try to settle him down but guess what, HE WALKED IN THE RUN ON 4 PITCHES! Pull him and cpu scored one more to go up 4-2. So of course I hit control-alt-delete (no just kidding ) but we know the game is over right, I mean you and I have both seen this pattern, yes? Funny thing happened though after I didn't quit, my human team scores 3 times in bottom of inning to go up 5-4 and went on to win 7-5. The cpu scored 1 in the top of the 9th. Have no idea how they didn't score more and win, I mean its a played out game not simulated.

How do you know if you hadn't control-alt-deleted you wouldn't have come back and won some of those games? Maybe you'd be 45-41?

IRL things that impact my enjoyment of baseball happen all of the time. In 1984 Leon Durham let a gb roll through his legs that cost the Cubs a world series trip. At least Bill Buckner's was in the WS and I never can figure out how everyone forgets Leon's coke head error. Bartman and Alou? Which wouldn't have made any difference if Gonzalez had just fielded the next groundball cleanly. If that sequence happens in OOTP somebody is on the boards saying the game is stacked against them. And if Markus programmed in Steve Sax or Chuck Knoblach's (sp?) dysfunctional throwing, not to mention Lester's, we'd all be screaming how unrealistic it was.

Just looking back over the last week of my season on the scores page I found these games.... All cpu vs cpu

Team scores 8 in top of 9th to win 12-11

home team down 4-2 after 4 innings. They score 4 in bottom of 9th to win 6-4

visiting team scores 3 in top of 9th to turn 5-3 deficit into a 6-3 lead, but wait...
home team scores 2 in bottom of the 9th to win 7-6

home team scores 2 in 8th and 3 in 9th to make a 7-3 deficit into a 8-7 win

visitors score 4 in top of 9th to make a 6-4 deficit into a 8-6 win

Again, all simulated games. 5 comebacks in 7 days. That's almost a comeback per day! Is the sim engine broke? Or is it more likely if we look at real world data we will find that there is nothing unusual going on here at all?

Some will never believe their feeling of what is happening is wrong no matter how much real world data is shown to them. Most won't keep track of what they are seeing to even try to prove they are right and the game is wrong. That or they do but don't share their findings, wonder why?

Keep one thing in mind if Markus went with feelings instead of facts "clutch" would still be a rating in OOPT

I am sincerely glad you are enjoying the game. I would suggest really trying to open your mind to the possibility that patterns you see aren't really patterns at all but more selective memory or observations. In my over 4,000 games played I remember way more games I lost that I thought I shouldn't have over games I won that I thought I shouldn't have.
It is a hard state of mind to get into sometimes, especially when things aren't going your way. When my ace walked in the run today in the back of my mind a voice was screaming "game over". My first wicked thought was to just bean the next batter to make myself feel better What did I have to lose? Game was over anyway. Instead I yelled at my monitor (I was home alone) and then did whatever I could to try to stem the tide, IE go to the pen and hope to get out of it with as little damage as possible. This time it worked, next time it may not. Just like real life.
