Minor League FA filing date
As far as I've always known, minor leaguers become free agents at the same time as major leaguers (I think).
I've found one player who his history says became a minor league free agent right after the AA season ended. Then retired the same day. Sep 9th. Seems like there shouldn't be any free agent filing until November 19th whether major or minor leaguers. I'm suspicious that the game magically declared him a free agent. The team definitely did not release him. It's only one player too, which makes me suspicious. If they became FA after their minor season ended there would have been many more. Any comments or enlightenment?

The real life dates for 2013 were as follows, according to the MLB.com listing of the important dates for that year.
Right after World Series Eligible XX(B) players become free agents 5th day after Last date to outright potential Minor League free agent without Major League contract, if permissable Last date for former club to tender qualifying offer to XX(B) players Minor League players become free agents at 5 p.m. ET, if applicable 6th day after XX(B) and Minor League free agents may sign with all clubs 12th day after Last date for XX(B) players to accept qualifying offer from former club I believe the date on which minor league players become free agents changed in the 2012 CBA. Before then, it was October 15th. |

Looking at his player page, he has 3 yrs, 157 days professional time, zero major league, zero secondary roster, 3 options remaining, not arb. eligible, and last entry NOT eligible for minor league free agency.
Yet here is his history (which seems impossible given the above:

I will apologize for the big bump, but I've seen the same thing.
Sean Newcomb (one of the few good Angels prospects) on my save just randomly became a minor league free agent and retired the same day the 2nd OOTP day of the save which I thought was pretty strange - and he had the exact same line of text in his history section as the screenshot above. Was playing in GM mode so I was in control of everything apart from setting line ups, so obivously no-one in my franchise should be becoming a free agent at the start of a season without me doing it, wondered if forcing players into specific roles (SP mainly) was causing it but on a separate test even without setting that it happened so couldn't really pinpoint the reason. Since then I've made several new games to test it and it hasn't occurred since, so I'm a bit miffed on why it was happening. On a seperate long term test (where I wasn't in charge of any ball clubs) it also seemed to happen with Nathan Eovaldi and the Newcomb thing is shown too. Got a couple of screenshots outlining it below: Newcomb Playing Stats: http://i.imgur.com/4q2DLg2.jpg Newcomb History: http://i.imgur.com/sn20M8x.jpg Eovaldi Playing Stats: http://i.imgur.com/XJB7V9J.jpg Eovaldi History: http://i.imgur.com/hAkEuvm.jpg The Eovaldi one is slightly more believable (in his 30's not playing major ball) but I find it strange after slugging away in the Indies for 3 years that he would retire 2 months after getting his contracted purchased by a *** club (as I would assume that was his end goal while playing in the Indies). Just guessing, but couldn't it be that the player was retiring anyway so the game made him an FA first, as a result of the retiring decision?

Now, why did he retire? Not sure there. |
