How late in a season can one disable playoffs?

I have a small fictional league, 1 subleague, 8 teams, no divisions. Right now I'm not using playoffs, so the team with the best record after 140 games is the champion. I have an idea for a championship series, but I'm not sure it will work. What I would like to do is, have a setup in which the top 2 teams meet in best of 9 playoff, but only if the 2nd place team is 3 or fewer games behind the 1st place team at the end of the season. So, using this setup, I would have to be able to disable playoffs late in the season and I'm not sure whether doing so will screw up my league.

I'm not sure, but you could always back up your league, then sim ahead to test it out?

I think I'm going to give my idea a try. It's the first season and I won't be out much if it doesn't work. I need to find more things to do at work instead of thinking about bizarre OOTP setups.
