Mike Carruthers. Probably 1970.

My bad; I just remembered that I'd seen some shots of Mike Hedlund in his first cup of coffee with the Tribe, and noticed that they were in Cleveland, so I simply checked those…and didn't account for the possibility of my having mismarked the Hedlunds. Sigh. Thanks for the correction.

(And of course there were plenty of other ways to check; such as examining the 1966 Topps cards or the 1965 schedule as you allude to. I was just being lazy.)

And - most easily for establishing a date for Topps images - remember that with the exception of some taken in San Francisco and a handful of others, ALL pre-1966 negatives "turned" to some degree into those awful red/brown discolored messes that ruin the otherwise great work. There is no explanation for this - could have been bad film stock, or bad storage, or who knows what - but even by 1967 the discoloration had begun and shows up on some cards. The 1967 Dave Boswell image - taken by Don Wingfield in Baltimore in 1965 - had already begun to go bad by the time Topps printed it less than two years later. There are a couple of later shoots - Brewers in spring training 1972 for instance - that have since gotten a little brown.

So rule of thumb: if the colors are natural, the odds are 99% that the image is 1966 or later. And if they aren't, the odds are 99% it's from 1965 or before.
Ahh; I hadn't known that the redness issue was so widespread. Yes, you can clearly see the difference between the nice 1966 Cleveland Newman and the Los Angeles Angels images of Newman in the same folder; the LA images, taken at Yankee Stadium in (I'm guessing) 1963, have gone bad in a way this one has not. Interesting.

I also don't have a way to adjust only a portion of an image, at least not that I'm aware of. All or nothing for me, I'm afraid.

Still, thanks for the tips.

After a little research…

The guy at the end of the first row, between the coaches and Bobby Locke, is Ray Webster.

At the left end of the second row, next to the traveling secretary, is Vic Power. At the other end of this row between Woodie Held (acquired, along with Power, in the trade of Roger Maris to Kansas City) and Russ Nixon is one of Nixon's fellow catchers, Ed Fitz Gerald.

And in the third row, between Dick Brodowski and Gary Bell, is Jim Baxes. The "B" team, if you will.

I do my "sliders" on iPhoto, because it was probably the first program I ever had with that. But the same feature is on GIMP and that's the program I isolate the jersey on. And GIMP is free, so you've got nothing to lose by giving it a spin around the block.

As far as Garrett's stint with the A's in 1971-72, all I could find were a couple of B/W pics from Getty Images, and since the "embed" trick isn't working for me (as far as getting rid of the watermark goes), I'll hold off and see if someone else has better luck with that.

Here's one with the A's. Sorry, this one had already been posted by Merkle here http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...post18621.html

I don't know if anyone needs an upgrade of him, but this was better than what was in my collection.

Mike Lavalliere, 1984 Phillies

Mike Lavalliere with the Phils isn't exactly a unicorn, but the only available photo of him in a Philly uniform prior to now was mediocre. Prior to now, I said. Here, courtesy of the excellent ebay seller thecatspajamas99, is Spanky in spring training 1984 with his major league debut club.

Tito Fuentes 1965

Also as promised, the Yankee Who Never Was.

I had remembered that Fuentes' 90 minutes in Pinstripes came after his career-ending cameo in Oakland but I'm beginning to think my memory is faulty on this. It seemed to me that they had brought in Fuentes, and summoned Brian Doyle from the minors and Doyle won the audition and was added to the roster.

The Yankees had an infield crisis (Bucky Dent and Willie Randolph both injured) in mid-June, and Doyle's seasonal debut was June 15. Fuentes' month with the A's didn't begin until June 20th and ended July 26th, so this suggests his day in New York preceded his farewell in Oakland.

So, this is June or July 1978. He was literally in the cage only long enough for me to get to it and get this image (at the wrong light and speed; thank goodness for photoshop tools) before his last swing.
