.434 Average

Ok, so i love this game. And what i love about it is that the statistics are so damn realistic. I've never had a player hit 60 homers, never had anyone with 150 rbis. No one's ever had a sub 1.75 era, no one has ever had more than 22 wins. Never had a hitting streak more than 32. So- yes- it mimics real baseball.

Until this year. My player, a SS, was unconscious this year. ended the year with a .434 average- more than .180 higher than the league average. While it was fun to see, I lament that it was so unrealistic. That is an impossible average. Mind you, this player is unedited. I traded a (future) Cy Young pitcher, a 2nd rd pick and 2 all stars (future) for him...and it has paid off well for both teams.

Any thoughts on how this much of an outlier occured.

Check his BABIP is the only thing I can think of. He probably just got insanely lucky.

Show his ratings. I suspect he is pretty good.

High contact + low eye + high avoid Ks + good gap power is my guess.

Here is his profile. But even granted all of the things you say as being true - it's impossible for a player to hit .434 and have 275 hits. Ichiro is the MLB record at 262 - and he only hit .370 that year.....

I guess my question would be - have you ever had a hitter in your league hit .400????

Yes, more than once in more than one league. I find it extremely cool. FWIW my leagues have decades of history so it's not unrealistic.

If anyone is going to bat 0.400 this is the guy. Great contact, doesn't strike out, doesn't really walk and has decent power and gap. You couldn't ask for a better candidate. He's clearly one of the best players in the league and in his prime. He is likely to revert to his career BA over the next three seasons.

Umm yeah, unless his injury history or defense is suspect. As a batter he is a stud.

You said you've had .400 hitters in your history - what was the league average in those years. On par with my history? Higher, lower? I guess i COULD understand a .400 hitter if the league avg was 275 or 280....but 250???

I'm fairly certain he'll win MVP. That's the highest WAR in league history too

Which explains why he hit 0.400. Outliers are part of the beauty of OOTP. If he hits like that for 2-3 seasons in a row then you may have a point.

Rogers Hornsby thinks this is a perfectly reasonable result.

I think its great that you got a player that has worked out to hit .400 records are meant to be broken. I love it when a player steps out from the normal and has a season that's superhuman as it were. To me it makes it more exciting to see and admittedly root for that player a bit. We get that even in the real world too.

Take a look at his 2029 season. He was on his way to having a monster season when he missed 1/3 of the season. Had 26 homers and hasn't even come close to that in a full season since.

His health is an issue. He missed a lot of time when he was younger.

This guy did it two years in a row (admittedly BARELY the second year):

League average in those two years was .264 and .261.

This is how I feel. I would welcome a (very) occasional anomaly like this as long as it's within the scope of entire baseball experience.

What the hell do I mean by this? (Sometimes I have to ask myself that question. )

Well, consider that the result was not .534 or .634 batting average. That would upset me.

But .434 is within the realm of human baseball experience, as shown below. Granted, it's not likely to occur in the modern era, but it has occurred and, who knows, could happen again.

So, I would treasure this result in my league, on a par with DiMaggio's streak and Ripken's record, and even Williams' .406 which we have never seen again. It becomes fable, legend.

Of course, if you are a purist, you may think otherwise. No, .434 is not realistic these days. But could it happen? Yes.

How did he not lead the league after hitting .401? Lack of PA to qualify?
