Gary Gray 1978

This is a little cleaner. The photo dates to April, 1979.

I may have posted this one previously. Taken by me in May, 1980.

Not sure what specifically is required in a 1980 image. Here's a '78 Toronto shot of mine which may suffice.

Dave Rajsich 1978 - While We're Here

With the Yankees.

BTW there is a Von Joshua/Padres from Topps Vault, but evidently it was one of the first sold (2007-8 era) and was only posted in very low definition. Somebody must have the original somewhere, but lord knows who.

There's a Hinton in the Brace Collection, a Bruno/St. Louis in the McWilliams Collection at the HOF. Never seen a Decker. Hale follows.

With the Mariners in the MLB-provided publicity slide from '79.

You are a magician, a beacon, a maestro. These are greatly appreciated as well as your insight that others are out there, somewhere.

Cheers!!

Re: "Randy Jones, 1983"

Is it "Ex-Mets Pitchers Named 'Randy' Who Couldn't Make the Pirates Day" and nobody told me?? Darn.

Well, if it is, have some 1977 Randy Tates to toss on that pile, from back in the old ET file:

I've even brightened them up for you. (No applause, just throw money. )

Brian Rose 1997

I still haven't managed to get the hang of that Getty Images workaround, but here, have this pic anyway.

One of exactly three appearances Rose made for the Mets in April 2001 before being cut loose:

(With brightening to fix the facial shadow issue, no disrespect to the original photog intended.)

Enjoy!

The pic posted looks just like Stone's 1963 Topps card. It may be another taken in the same session, but real close.

Tom Brunansky 1981

Not much of him in an Angels uniform - except for his Topps rookie card, the photo for which was taken at the same shoot as the images posted by the Vault today.

BTW I am just back from a consulting day at Topps and discussed with my oldest friend there why - given that I had a working knowledge of the entire photo archive when it was still housed in New York - so many negatives have shown up on eBay that I either searched for but could not find, or which depict players who did NOT have files in New York. It was his belief that there was evidence that there had already been a second photo archive in the Topps manufacturing plant in Duryea, Pennsylvania.

In short this means that the estimate I made of how many different negatives there are - at least a million - is very low. I think we should assume two million. That's great news for variety and the number of players and uniform combinations that might yet surface. The bad news is, if you're waiting for a SPECIFIC image, your wait might be a little longer. Topps doesn't have enough negatives to sell 20 a day until the year 2152 - It has enough to sell 20 a day through the year 2289.

Von Joshua Padres 1980

Here, as promised, is the better shot of Von Joshua with the Padres in 1980. I got this from an ebay seller whose name I unfortunately failed to note. It was one of the old reliables like signatures4u!, autographsink, or andy1921. Anywho, this picture is autographed and shows Von in action, and the resolution is much better than the only Topps Vault image we've seen so far.

In the dugout, in the shades, in his only season as Padres manager, the late great Jerry Coleman.

How I miss that man.

I don't know how good a broadcaster Jerry was, but he covered the Pads for many years. He was a good, not a great, ballplayer, one of Casey Stengel's favorite multi-position infielders. He had no managerial experience when he became manager of the Pads in 1980, and it sure showed. The team played badly under him, but that wasn't all Jerry's fault. He was saddled with a crowd of plus-30 veterans who were past their best, some of whom (Dave Cash, Willie Montanez) had big egos and inflated opinions of themselves. Jack McKeon was shocked at the clubhouse atmosphere when he took over as GM that year; he said he practically had to use a firehose to get the bums off the roster.
