Ben Callahan: forgotten?
Here's a gentlemen I'd never heard of ... RHP Ben Callahan, a four-game pitcher with Oakland in 1983 after being acquired for Matt Keough. This was probably spring training of that year or 1982, but he was a rare 17-game winner in Class A ball in 1981. He stood 6-7, so I'm guessing he was mighty imposing on the mound.
Sadly, passed away at age 49 in 2007. Last edited by rico43; 10-03-2015 at 03:43 AM. |

The Philly pitcher looks like Ryne Duren. He was with the Phillies a couple of different years.

George Scott 1966
I don't think I've posted this before. George "Boomer" Scott, two years from banging 33 homers for the Red Sox, was dealt by them in early 1979, released two months later by the Royals, and then joined the Yankees at the end of August for 15 shots as the DH and about two innings at first base - and actually hit .318 in his big league farewell.
I was there several times in September, 1979, and I never saw him do as much as take batting practice. But he did drink a lot of coffee and visit with a lot of players. Not sure what was going on with that patch on his face. Feel free to use this image as needed. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-02-2017 at 07:40 PM. |

Eddie (Buddy) Solomon, White Sox 1982
Here, as promised, is a color shot of Buddy Solomon from the ebay seller dr.jteeee, watermark and all. During his ten year career Buddy pitched for the Dodgers, Cubs, Cardinals, and Braves before joining the Pirates prior to the 1980 season. Pittsburgh traded him to the White Sox on June 14th 1982 for infielder Jim (Riders on the Storm) Morrison. The deal looked like a fire sale for both clubs; Solomon was 2-6 with a 6.75 ERA at that point, while Morrison was hitting .223 and fielding just .914 as the White Sox third baseman. Morrison's career recovered quickly and he lasted until 1988 as an oddity, a good-hit utilityman whose bat was better than his glove. Buddy Solomon wasn't so fortunate. The Sox were very short of relief that year and Buddy posted a fairish 3.68 ERA in just seven innings of long relief work in his new league, but Chicago released him anyway on July 6th, two days after his last major league appearance. Buddy pitched poorly for AAA Columbus in the Yankees chain the following year, and then he was gone. He died in a car wreck in 1986 in his native Georgia. Morrison, the man Buddy was traded for, is also a Georgian.

Do you know of any other images of Stewart, for confirmation? I deduced that this is most likely him on Baseball-Birthdays, a few years back, but could never find the "proof".

Luis Quinones Oakland As 1983
Luis Quinones had a fairly respectable career as a major league utilityman in the 80s and 90s, playing for the Giants and the Cubs before enjoying some success with the Lou Piniella Reds. Cards and photos of him with those clubs are plentiful, but Luis first came up with the A's in 1983, and that is a different story. The only shot I had seen of Quinones as an A was a smallish black and white news shot, but yesterday I found this autographed color image on ebay. Here it is, courtesy of the excellent ebay seller andy1921.
Now if only I could find Quinones as a Red in 1988, when he wore No. 9 instead of No. 10... Last edited by Terry D; 10-04-2015 at 09:54 PM. |

There is a hatless image taken at the same time in II427, but I do not have the confirmation. Believe in one, believe in the other, but he was in a very solid alphabetical file.

Stewart
Yes - I scanned a negative from this shoot directly out of the Topps photo. It's a Laughead and it was marked "Tom Stewart."

Each Monday through the end of the playoffs, I need to impose on the group to slam shut all of my dangling threads. Not that many ... but we have done a lot in a short period of time. To make it interesting, I will give you these by team.

I am far from an expert on the period, but I think HG382 looks like Harry Chiti.

Ted Davidson 1965
Nothing like the combination of an original copy of the team-issued print of the team picture, and improved scanning software.
This'd still be just filler if a real photo of him ever pops up, but the quality of the filler just improved: Ted Davidson during his four-game finale to his major league career with the 1968 Braves. There is more than a little irony to the fact that there's a nice clean picture of him in camp with the 1969 Indians but nothing besides the team picture of him in Atlanta. |
