Orlando Pena

Regarding Pena, wasnt he shown on a 1959 Topps card in a Reds uniform? Merkle indicated he thought Topps never got him in a Reds uniform.

Orlando Pena / Topps

Correct. Topps never got him in a Reds uniform - all they did was colorize this 1958 team-issued black and white shot for use on his 1959 card (and use the same image as the "action" picture on his 1963 card, with logos airbrushed away).

It just strikes me odd that he spent all of 1960, parts of the 1958, 1960 and 1961 seasons, and at least those four Spring Trainings with the Reds, yet the only evidence that they might have photographed him in a Cincinnati uniform is the cap less shot with the vague background on his 1963 card.

I Stand Corrected! Orlando Pena 1958

In a Reds' uniform, in one of those rare early Topps Vault postings before it dawned on them to watermark them (or scan them at even medium-def). Sent to me by a contact who saved the download originating on eBay eight years ago.

This looks more 1960 than 1959 but not an obvious way to tell. But it is consistent with the 1963 capless image with the really unfocused background - which we now know is Wrigley Field.

Your Washington National Senators

A fascinating piece in the November Hunt Auction - a 22" by 25" display of photos of the Washington American League team: 20 small portraits to the waist, in ovals, one large center portrait marked "1904."

1904 would be a good guess - that big picture in the middle looks like Patsy Donovan, the underrated 17-year outfielder who managed the Washington's from May 11, 1904 through the end of the season - and the catcher in the second row, second from the right, sure looks like the equally superannuated Malachi Kittridge (who started the season as player-manager). Right above him would seem to be fellow catcher Boileryard Clarke, who was in Washington from 1901 through 1904.

The problem is the uniforms.

Those ones with the ornate, almost spiked "W's" (top row, upper left) can date only to the 1903 season, but from the franchise's start, the serifed thick block letter "W" unis were, per Okkonen's authoritative guide on the subject, only worn in the road uniforms of 1905 and 1911- and not again until 1938 (there is a block letter "W" home uniform from 1902, but it's sans serif, and worn over an outlined chest pocket no less).

Just to ratchet up the mystery, of course - no ID's. Happy Hunting.

Mike Payne 1984

Didn't recognize him when Topps uploaded him to the storage site, but now he's been identified on eBay.

It's the elusive very brief Brave pitcher from 1984:

While we respect Merkle's phrashing, those of have access to the Topps Folder UU at that "other" site, this Pena image is UU469.

If you're going to get territorial about images that don't belong to you, or me, or this forum, or any other, may I suggest that you keep your logic consistent and not hypocritical? Why not ask only your own members at the "other site" to which you refer, to identity the extraordinary volume of players whose names and faces are total mysteries to you?

I didn't realize that was what I was doing. I apologize. I have tried to tread carefully to avoid offending, angering or otherwise colliding with other posters and their projects. Extraordinary volume of IDs? I suppose so, but I have been ID'ing them with only my recollection, clues and no background in the TV project. I could walk away at any time, but my nature is to finish something I started or help start any way I can. I'm just a guy in Chattanooga with limited resources and contacts doing the best I can.

I felt both sites benefitted from the work, but I have tried not to overwhelm this site with them. You and others have made it so much of a success that, by current count, we have ID'd 102 different "Folders."

With John over at BB Birthdays tracking each TV release now, there isn't much left to do. The light is at the end of the tunnel. By the end of the year this project will be as complete as it can be.

And that's an awesome feeling, that so many people have been willing to contribue seeing it done right -- and some of that is fixing mistakes I made along the way.

And once it's done, you won't be having much of me here, or there.

Forum members, there is such a good thing going on this and the 'other' board that have like minded people locating, sharing, and identifying pictures, that it's easy to step on toes. I know I've done it in the past, however with tnfoto and John's help I've continually tried to offer the right etiquette at the right time.

No soapbox here mind you, just a push to continue to offer the unique service that you all do. It is greatly appreciated and sincerely valued at least by this poster.

And then maybe, just maybe that clear color photo of Tom Underwood as a Cardinal from 1977 will finally reveal itself..... (Sorry - I couldn't help myself....)

Hi everyone...brand new here, but this is a great resource for finding player images. Hopefully this is an acceptable place to post this...I know a lot of the pictures in these posts seem to be players from the early days of baseball, but I'm looking for some Detroit Tigers pictures from the mid-'90s. Looking for:
1993 - Dave Johnson (P), Mark Grater (P)
1994 - Greg Cadaret (P)
1995 - Kevin Wickander (P), Derrick White (OF), Ron Tingley (C), Franklin Stubbs (OF), Dwayne Henry (P)
1996 - Phil Hiatt (INF), John Farrell (P), Jeff McCurry (P), Tom Urbani (P), Mike Walker (P), Todd Van Poppel (P), Bob Scanlan (P)
I know this is a ton of requests for a first timer, but anything anyone has would be great! Thanks!

Kingman

Amazing, huh? And it underscores that the Topps archive is MUCH larger than what was stored in New York, because Kingman with the Yankees was the first image I looked for in my 20-odd visits to the room.

It's a lovely white whale but it still means I have to unpack everything I have in storage looking for a color shot I took of him from the stands - in the same spot on the field, same pose - but haven't seen in 20 years.

Yes, I am Eeyore.

Pete Whisenant 1952

Never saw him in a Twins uniform before - near the end in 1961.

BTW yes, the Kingman suggests there could be a stash of unsorted 1977 images somewhere. Not that Underwood will show up but my guess would be the odds it exists went up 50% today.

I think this is the second image of him with the 1960 Senators.

Two rare batting poses, but both reversed. Whisenant was a righthanded hitter.
