Determining if it was a good hit or bad defense
I apologize if this has been discussed before but I searched and could not find anything on this...with respect to defense and player range, is there a way to determine if a hit was a result of good hitting or because of an infielder or outfielder with bad range (i.e. they should have got to the ball)? I know they have their ZR and EFF stats but it doesn't give me how they performed in a particular game. Something like they were 50% on range plays (where they could have made a play on the ball and recorded an out for that particular game).
I hope that question makes sense. I have made some alterations to my line-up in an effort to improve my defense and I want to see on a game-by-game basis who is performing well defensively and who is not. |

If you play your games out, good or bad defense will be commented on. "left fielder shows his limited range", "that will go down as a base hit - but in all honesty, second baseman should have gotten it" or conversely ".... out! shortstop shows how it's done!"
And good defenders can hold hitters to worse hits as well. "right fielder gets behind it", cutting off a potential double or triple into a single, or "deep into the hole shortstop makes a lunging grab! he pumps - but holds on to it", infield hit, but runners from 2nd can't score. However, overall I'd take a big sample size and use statistical ratings, instead of using this "eye" test. The eye test gave Jeter a Gold Glove, despite him being average at best. |
