Protected Draft Picks

Does anyone know exactly what draft picks are protected in the amateur draft?

In my specific situation, I pick 12th in the first round but 9th in every round after that. I can sign one player or trade for another; if the pick is protected, I'll spend the money and sign the free agent, but if it's not protected I would rather keep the pick and make the trade.

I noticed that under the league rules section, the 2012 CBA changes are in effect, which protects the top 10 picks, but since my "real" selection would be 9th but I was bumped to 12th in the first round, is that first-round pick protected or would I lose it for signing a free agent?

I think what you are saying is that there were three teams who didn't sign a first round pick, therefore getting a compensation pick before you. I dont know how this would work in the game, and there is no precedence of three teams not signing a pick in real life. IMO, if it did happen in real life I think the top ten teams would still be protected regardless if they were bumped. If Cincinnati signed someone last offseason who received compensation we would have seen what happens.

My best advice is save the game, make a backup and play quickly through each scenario of signing a FA or not.

You are correct about my situation, but I think it actually did happen in real life, with the Mets deciding not to sign Michael Bourn because it would cost them a draft pick; I think they "should have" had a protected pick, but because the Astros did not sign Brady Aiken the previous year, they were bumped out of the top 10 and did not have a protected pick. I think the real-life rule was then changed to make such a situation still a protected pick, but I don't know if that change was reflected in OOTP.
